I'm not talking about "gaming headsets". Real quality headphones not over priced average sounding headphones that have excessive bass and water down everything else.

I've used every brand of gaming headsets. Astros are overpriced. They market well though

The bottom line, if you want to stop reading here, is don’t buy a gaming headset unless you want an all-in-one package and are willing to sacrifice audio/build quality to get it. Because of how much time I spend using headphones and recording audio, I feel as though I’m somewhat of a novice authority on audio equipment. […]

A40s are constantly described as decent in terms of audio quality. I want more than decent for $300

Considering the title of this thread is "Gaming headsets" I don't know why I wrongly assumed that was what we were discussing; I didn't even realize we were discussing high quality headphones instead..

I didn't realize "gaming headsets" (headphones with a mic and some targeted marketing) were the only ones capable of relaying sound from a video game. Limiting the discussion to "gaming headsets" is not doing anyone any favors. The thing is high quality headphones are often cheaper than expensive gaming headsets.

I appreciate getting good audio and getting your moneys worth.

I'm not making a comparison for astros vs other gaming headsets. I'm saying that expensive gaming headsets are overpriced when compared to quality headphones.

If you're looking for high quality audio, don't settle for expensive gaming headsets.

I understand this and agree with some of what you are saying. But console gamers don't have a lot of choice here if you want to use a microphone. What high quality headset has a microphone that you would recommend over an astro for use on a PS4?

I've been disappointed with the build quality of the Cloud II (repaired twice and failed), the cheap Tritton works but is uncomfortable and my kids currently use the Sony Golds which are good although many of their friends complain the mic doesn't sound very good. And I would prefer wireless although something that plugs directly into the DS4 with volume control is fine.

I use this with my headphones. There are a few other options as well. Some cheaper, some more expensive.

                  https://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPr...attachable+mic

For example, if you get that mic and pair it with these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024NK344/ref=dp_cerb_3?th=1 or https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD.../dp/B004FEEY9A, you'll have better sound quality than $300 Astros. You'll actually hear mids and highs, instead of mediocre Astro bass.

Sennheiser will definitely sound better, but it's stereo sound. The gaming headsets have simulated 7.1 sound and built in mics and are wireless. I can't have long wires in front of my tv. It annoys the hell outta me.

                      Gaming headsets

Well after using the newer Astro A40 mix amp M80 headset over the weekend they were just ok. Checked Best Buy website this morning and to my surprise the 2016 Astro A50 was in stock. Headed over there after work today and got the only pair on the shelf. Set me back $299 but with what they offer I didn't mind.

300 headphones are over priced but they are wireless and allow you to take calls as well in terms of TB headphones

Have simulated surround sound and you can get them cheap after a few months like the elites which can be had for like 230

Senheiser are superior for listening to music plugged into a system but for gaming TB and AStro charge premium to give wireless headphones

I know a wired controller performs better then my wireless one but ask me which I prefer

You'd be better off with headphones that have a larger soundstage than virtual surround sound on a headset with an average soundstage.

You could have the best of both worlds and get a decent pair of headphones and then buy a used mixamp on ebay.

What was wrong with the A40s? They actually should sound better than the A50s. Trading some sound quality for wireless.

They were ok. Didn't care for the cord that connected to the controller for one. Felt cheap/flimsy also I was concerned about shorting the cord out.

I had my eye on these for the last couple of months but it seemed that the release date kept getting pushed back and no firm release date in sight. Then today I see them in-stock.

They are pretty darn comfortable and the sound is amazing. Other than the ugly green color I think these are winners.

I couldn't agree more. The driver which is the component of the headphone that produces the sound is probably the most important thing when you are considering a headphone (see figure below). "Headset" is a fancy term to sell highly overpriced pre-packaged headphone/mic combos to gamers who are frankly not willing to take the time to research and see if what they are buying is truly worth it. If you want a decent setup you can buy a good quality headphone like the ones posted above and pair it with a good amplifier like the mixamp or the turtlebeach DSS2 (if surround sound is your thing) and I guarantee you the sound quality will be better than any pre-packaged combo gaming headsets you can buy in the market.

I have little to no knowledge on how the xbox one outputs audio but I can tell you a thing or two about the PS4. The PS4 outputs game audio through the optical port (digital out). You can use a DSS2 or even a DSS amplifier to output amplify that sound into a good quality headset. All you will need then is a syba usb attachment to make your chat audio in/out functional. Just so that you guys know that I am not posting this to be critical or condescending towards anyone, if any of you actually would like to see a detailed wiring diagram of such a set up I will be more than willing to help you out with that.

Here is a pair of headphones that are better than any of the "headsets" mentioned in previous posts such as the astro a40s and a50s. It only costs a fraction of those headsets at $28 bucks.
