They've had demo ones out for almost a year it feels like at the Fry's out here. They are made by monster I believe.

They have an insane quality feel to them, very sturdy & weighty (kinda smallish feeling, size wise). The sound was really crisp & clear, you can tell they aren't cheap speakers in the cans. The over ear cups are smaller than usual, in comparison to other over ear gaming headsets. Very soft & comfortable, they look nice in black or white and honestly the only reason I didn't buy them months back was because of the price.

Fry's had them out for the longest time at $249.99 (or maybe 229, I forget) but I know they weren't 199. They must've dropped the price because they weren't selling well. They are truly, quality feeling & looking headsets though.

Honestly, with Sony Golds I'm spoiled. I have no reason to use any other headset again. The wireless has me spoiled, I have 2 other expensive headsets that I now never use because of all the wires.

I'd say if you were thinking about the MVP Carbon's, save yourself $100 and buy the Golds. You'll have money left to buy a game or something.

Unless of course you're a complete, audio junkie. They definitely had much more of a quality sound (MVP Carbons) over the Golds. But you're paying for that difference.

I'm not sure it will add any "punch" to the bass, but there's a console app with custom EQ, although only low/mid/high. I assume you're already using #2 on the on/off switch for bass boost.

            Re: Gaming headsets

            About the golds:

The bass is punchy, it's just going to be recessed because of the angled drivers, especially the extreme angle the golds have. Angled drivers really open soundstage, and gives you much better positional audio, but it also pushes highs way forward. Based on the sound I would guess they are semi open, I bet there are ports in the back of the cup by the band. They work nice for positional audio, they did need better tuned drivers or housings, but they are also cheap (got mine for $60, which is nothing for a wireless headset).

If I had to guess they are actually semi-open and probably have some ports in the back of the earcup, might be able to tune them if you get back in there and cover some of these ports. Might make them muddy, but might be worth a shot.

            Edit:

If you slide off the face plate off the golds, there are four screws

Take those out, and it's held on by a few clips, I used a guitar pick to slide underneath from where the screws were and pop those clips. Have to be a bit careful here, the plastic for the little shield isn't brittle but it's pretty thin, it didn't give me trouble but it did flex a lot. They aren't really structural, I was wearing them without these plates at all.

Underneath we can see the area where the earcups meet the headband. See those ports.

I just did it a bit quick and just used a little packing tape to cover most of the holes.

Haven't tested it near enough (I only listened to about half a song from my MP3 player, same as I did before taking it apart), but immediately the highs seemed toned down, low end is brought forward, mids are still way out front but that's the angle of the driver. Something interesting, if you look at the back of both cups the holes are different, probably to tune the two cups given one has electronics and (presumably)a battery in it.

Amazon has the Sony Gold headsets for the PS4 for $79...are these good for chat?

I ask because I really want to get to online gaming on the PS4 but have a really hard time hearing other people and I've tried a couple of different cheaper headsets..

Will spend the $79 if they're good for chat but would like to hear from some other OSers first..

I've been pleased so far with them. No one has complained about anything with voice so far. The sound is actually good.

Just picked up a set of the Astro A50's on sale at Best Buy for $224 and if it's in your budget you owe it to yourself to buy this headset. The sound is insanely amazing. I had these a couple years ago and my son borrowed them and never returned them. Now I know why.

I agree 100%. For the price the Sony's aren't bad, but overall the Astros are way better than the Sonys no comparison. They have better directional surround sound and have a lot more punchier bass too.

Everything you said, 100 percent true and not debatable.

But we're talking 50-90 bucks vs 250-300 bucks depending on the deal you get wherever.

                          Two drastically different price ranges.

Get a regular pair of headphones and attach a mic to them. Astro sound isn't $300 sound. The mixamp is nice but the actual headset is just average.

I purchased the A50s months ago. I wasn't happy with the sound, firmware updates or mic quality so I dumped them. It doesn't help that their support is slow to respond.

I picked up my headphones based on this site.

If I'm paying $300 for something then they shouldn't be rated "decent" in any category related to competitive gaming.

It's hard to say what's worth $300. Gaming headsets are almost always overpriced since you're paying for convenience. Who wants to use a USB mic? Or if you're looking for a truly wireless solution you don't have many options.

The Astro headset sound is mainly driven by the mixamp which you can buy on ebay for $40. The headphones couldn't even hold up to a pair of $150 headphones. Just find a pair of headphones with a large soundstage and you'll be well on your way.

In a way Astro headsets are the gaming equivalent of Beats headphones. Huge emphasis on bass while drowning out mids.
