The Sony Gold's have the sidetone feature. I personally don't care for it at all. You just hold the MUTE button until it beeps to change the level. I think there are 3 levels. I make sure it's off or it feels like you just have static noise in the background.

Did you get the 80ohms version or 250?

I've come to the conclusion that the majority of gaming headphones for consoles aren't that good and don't have good sound. Most emphasize on bass, but muddy bass. If you truly want great sounding headphones with punchy clean bass with good mids and highs you'll need some monitor headphones and just add a mic. After listening to good headphones even while gaming brands like turtle beach and astros sound terrible to me. They just sound too muddy. I admit that I really like the way the clouds sound even though they're gaming headphones.

Nature of the beast I guess. I made this comparison somewhere in here before but its like when you see mice brands bragging about how high their DPI goes. It matters almost zero for gaming and anything over 600dpi is almost unuseable fast, yet you see things like the Logitech G900 bragging it can do 12,000 DPI. All I see is marketing BS and the reason why I parallel this to the gaming headsets is because this trend has happened across gaming where the peripherals push the look (RGB lights for example) almost more so than the true function.

On the gaming headset front this is done with "accurate 5:1/7:1 virtual surround sound and crystal clear mic", but very little is shown hardware wise what is being used. Astro A40s for example is using a little 40mm driver, this matters because in general terms the larger the driver equals to a more powerful output and they are skimping on the true function of the unit. Now there are plenty of other factors to that such as the enclosure & type, but in sweeping generalization terms, gaming headsets push wireless capabilities, virtual surround sound, and inclusion of microphone much more over the quality of the sound.

Now this we should all be use to if we play EA sports titles, "back of box" features are the selling point. There is nothing wrong with gaming headsets, they have a market for a reason, but there is also a group which wants their gaming sound to be as fantastic as high-end MUSIC focused headphones can supply. For this group of gamers, a little more work is required but the results are pretty fantastic.

Virtual surround sound vs 2ch stereo is another debate which is very similar to the headset vs headphone debate lol.

In my opinion, stereo sound with a great headset beats all that 7.1 surround crap.

Especially for games. 7.1 is actually worse for competitive shooters like CS

Hey, Phobia. I ended up buying the Steelseries Arctis 5. I'm just looking for a decent stereo set for the PS4 when not using the Astro's. May use them on PC as well.

And yeah, the sidetone thing is something I really like for some reason. I feel like hearing my own voice gives me a good indication of how my voice is coming across.

80's. Mix Amp drives them just fine as does a mobile phone; they get plenty loud. I do have a Fiio portable amp if I need more juice but that is very rare; I've considered selling that as I never use it. You may "need" and amp with the 250's but I cannot say as I've never used them.

Had my PS Golds for about a year and all in a week the bands starting cracking. Had to make a redesign of my headsets with some nice shipping tape, but it seems to be holding well now lol.

Absolutely, but that debate can get pretty heated in some forums lol

I run my AKG K612s in stereo naturally, but I tested the virtual surround sound feature the Sound Blaster Z sound card offers and its complete garbage. I could tell left and right but up, down, and distance became a crap shoot. 2ch stereo + open-backs = much more precise.

Oh nice, I saw those were mentioned a couple times as top 5 headset for 2017 but couldn't find any information if they had sidetone. I'm guessing since you went with them, they must have the feature?

I've used the feature on my Yeti just to make sure the mic was working correctly, but constantly hearing myself during a stream when your talking a lot becomes a bit overbearing for me.

I really like Steelseries products, I've never used their headsets before but they do make good stuff, so hopefully these work out for you Phil!

You would 100% require an amp for the 250ohm model and if being used on a PC, I'd go one step further adding a DAC . Even the 80ohm is pushing it on some devices without a amp. I'd say 50ohm is the max you want to go ampless, 100ohm+ you surely want one, now that isn't saying a device won't push an 80ohm driver but your severely lowering the ceiling of what that speaker is capable of. If you are spending several hundred on a nice pair of cans, make sure you have enough power to push them, that way you are getting the most out of what you paid for.

What do you guys on console use for a mic when you're going with just a headset vs. one of the gaming ones with a mic built in?

I don't really need a mic for gaming as much, but realistically I'd be buying headphones to wear while working but also gaming, and having the mic is good for meetings and the like (I work from home a few days a week, we do a lot of web meetings)

Some sort of inline mic? I guess for meetings i could just rely on my laptop's mic, but if I ever played online (which i do rarely) I wouldn't be able to use those headphones.

Not buying anytime soon, but just wondering...Comfort is required too, if i'm wearing them a while...my Razer Carcharias headphones are the most comfy ever, so I'd struggle to actually pull the trigger unless it's comfy. Hate the ones that are too tight or have ear cups that aren't soft...the fabric ear cups vs. leather/vinyl feel much nicer I've found.

The Antlion Mod mic's are extremely popular as an addon for nice headphone users who don't want to go full boom + mic (yeti, audiotechnica, etc)

I've been in the market for a headphone stand and I really like theirs, looks classy. Here is a couple others I like as well.

That's cool...figured that'd be the way to go. Maybe while I'm setting up a better home office after the move I'll upgrade the headphones and free up my current ones for gaming more too....

If you have a pair of headphones that has a removable cord, you can also use the v-moda boompro which is what I use. It replaces the 3.5mm cord of your headphones so you only have to deal with one wire.
