It took me years of sticking with them before finally branching out to quality headphones before I finally understood the difference between the two.

    * Headsets (ones which have built in mics or wireless) are built for the console or couch crowd. Ease of use, no wires, and sound which will satisfy 99%, gives them excellent value for what they supply. They won't excel in any area of comfort, sound, or positional audio but they will offer no wires to get in the way & a mic to communicate with your teammates.

    * Headphones naturally built solely for supplying detailed sound covered in specific frequencies will give you a more detail sound experience. The suggestion of these over headsets are mainly for people in PC type situations where cables are not a problem and a separate mic can be set up.

Now what I'd like to make clear, I don't suggest high-end headphones for their sound detail, that to me is a minor pro. Instead I suggest them because of open back positional audio & comfort. Until someone experiences a excellent open back headphone they can't truly wrap their head around the difference between them & a closed back headset.

I'd compare a closed back headset to someone with a head cold with bad nasal congestion. Its almost a stuffy sound when compared to the airiness aka clear headed sound of an open back. This isn't only amazing in gaming for positional audio but when you listen to live music, its truly a wonderful experience.

    Comfort is pretty self explanatory.

So I've seen you been through the ringer when it has come to headsets Pvarck, if you have any hang ups with the A40s & need some help picking out a different pair, just let me know man. I'd be more than happy to lend a hand.

I'm in the market for a new set of headphones and mic for PS4 what would you recommend?

Open back headphones let everyone around you hear things though, correct? To me that'd be a negative at times.

Open-back do bleed sound, yes. Now that also depends on how loud you tend to listen. I've never had my wife complain or anything about her hearing the gaming sounds so it will depend on how your using them. If you were laying in bed next to her gaming with them on, then yes she would hear but if its another room, no they are not that loud.

Interesting...I'll have to look into it more in the future when I have an opportunity to get a good set of gaming headphones. I really don't chat or play online a ton, so maybe a cheap inline mic could work with a nicer pair of non-mic headphones that are really comfy. Comfort's more key to me vs. sound, if I'm wearing these 2-4 hours they have to fit amazingly.

Yea that's primarily why I went with AKG, they are very comfortable. I ran Sennheiser for a long time and got frustrated with the "clampy-ness" of most their headphones.

Here is a couple brands which tend to get high marks for comfort. You will naturally have odd balls in them, so always research. A good example of this is the AKG Q701 Quincy Jones edition. Look at the headband, see those bumps......yea hours of those pressing will cause some discomfort

I ended up returning the Sony Platinums. 2 months later and it still wasn't saving the sound presets. I also hated the fact that the bass is weak. Besides Astros are there any other wireless headphones that do virtual 7.1 and have decent bass?

I think some of the TB headsets do.

                        Re: Gaming headsets

I bought a couple if headsets. The hyper cloud 2, Steelseries arctic 7, Astros A40 and the turtle beach 520. The turtle beach are hot trash and getting returned. Already retuned the Sony platinums for lack of bass and presets not sticking. Turtle beach have bass but it's not clean and the mids and highs sound very muffled which is typical with turtle beach. I ended up using the astro mix amp pro TR with the hyperx clouds 2 and by far the absolute best sound I've been able to get on consoles. Had the A50's before as well and also own a pair of Sony Golds. To me nothing comes this close in great sound. Yes, I'm wired but I ended up buying a 12 foot 3.5mm extension and all I have is one wire coming from my entertainment center to me on the couch.

Many people including myself enjoyed the Astros a lot but the highs aren't that good on them while they have a ton of bass, but the bass can be overpowering. The combination of the clouds 2 and this mix amp destroy the astros a50/a40. The clouds 2 are a great balance of good highs while still having punchy bass. The clouds without the mix amp don't sound anywhere near as good. So for anyone looking for a great headset I recommend the clouds 2 with the astros mix amp pro TR. You'll love everything you hear trust me.

Damn, didn't know that. I paid the $10 for the 2 year warranty at best buy so if they go bad i'll change them.

I've been using the Philips SHP 9500 and vmoda boompro mic for just about a year now which ran me for about $70 total. These two combined are by far the best headset I've ever had. To be fair though, I've never had the chance to try out the high end headphones/headsets. I can hardly tell I have a headset on as it is very light and comfortable.

My gold headset now just collects dust. I've never noticed how uncomfortable those were until getting used to the Philips. It's a much tighter clamp compared to the Philips and I can't wear the golds for much longer than half an hour without feeling discomfort.

Only advantage golds have on these is being wireless. The mic and audio quality blow out the golds by far. The Philips are an open back headphone so sound does leak if that bothers anyone. It isn't noticeable unless someone is sitting right next to you.
