    Re: Gaming headsets

Yeah, the Arctis 5's seem to be one of the best reviewed sets of the year. I just got them today from Amazon and will try them out tonight.

Sidetone is a feature for them that can be turned on and off in their software companion app. But I have heard mixed impressions that say the settings will save and work on PS4. So I'll find out later. Not the end of the world if it doesn't work.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. Got these earlier today and I'm blown away. I got the 250 ohms version and using my Yamaha AV receiver. These are amazing. The bass is so clean but punchy!!

All I see is marketing BS and the reason why I parallel this to the gaming headsets is because this trend has happened across gaming where the peripherals push the look (RGB lights for example) almost more so than the true function.

On the gaming headset front this is done with "accurate 5:1/7:1 virtual surround sound and crystal clear mic", but very little is shown hardware wise what is being used. Astro A40s for example is using a little 40mm driver, this matters because in general terms the larger the driver equals to a more powerful output and they are skimping on the true function of the unit. Now there are plenty of other factors to that such as the enclosure & type, but in sweeping generalization terms, gaming headsets push wireless capabilities, virtual surround sound, and inclusion of microphone much more over the quality of the sound.

Now this we should all be use to if we play EA sports titles, "back of box" features are the selling point. There is nothing wrong with gaming headsets, they have a market for a reason, but there is also a group which wants their gaming sound to be as fantastic as high-end MUSIC focused headphones can supply. For this group of gamers, a little more work is required but the results are pretty fantastic.

Virtual surround sound vs 2ch stereo is another debate which is very similar to the headset vs headphone debate lol.

I couldn't agree with you more. These gaming headsets are almost all gimmicky. I can't believe for all these years I've been with mediocre sound with headsets. I've almost always gamed with "Gaming" headsets late at night because I don't want to annoy the wife or my kid. I bought the Beyerdynamics DT770 pro and I'm blown away.

I use my AV receiver then run a wired mic from my remote clipped onto my shirt. My Av receiver has a virtual surround sound mode and it's great. Once you use some quality headphones and go back and listen to gaming sets you can easily notice how inferior they are. Most of these gaming headsets just focus on bass, but it's muddy and zero emphasis on quality sound. Like you said for those that desire better quality sound I highly suggest to buy yourself some HIFI headphones. Gaming headphones offer more convenience but the sound doesn't compare.

I want to thank you and Big D for the suggestions.

i don't know how you guys could use headsets without the sidetone feature. I'd find myself yelling all the time to other players if I couldn't hear my own voice through my headphones.

              Re: Gaming headsets

So after using the Steelseries Arctis 5's for a few days I can say the sound is fantastic. Moving the cable that goes into the controller doesn't cause any static, which is nice.

The mic seems good as well. Played Friday the 13th and everyone could hear me loud and clear. Only problem is I can't get the sidetone to work for the PS4. I can't seem to find anything to help me figure it out so I'm assuming it doesn't work. Which is one feature I really wanted. I guess I'll deal with it because I think my wife would kill me if I returned another headset.

I could have gotten a Turtle Beach set because all of them have sidetone, but I just don't think they are good quality.

The only other negative which directly ties into the mic is they are closed back so I can barely hear myself talk.

But like I said, the sound is fantastic. I would definitely recommend this set if you don't mind sidetone being unavailable on PS4.

My PS4 Gold's died the other day. Research for new ones is quite tedious. Would these be a good pick....

Would I need to buy more stuff to make these work? Seems like a ton of power there.

I had some TB wireless, they died, past warranty. and TB customer service horrible, they lost a customer. Anyone got good suggestions for xbox one gaming headset? Might go not wireless to avoid issue again. Sound is most important im looking at.

Wait for the LucidSound headsets to drop. They and several other headsets are taking advantage of Microsoft’s new wireless sound.

                      Gaming headsets

Hey guys. I'm in need of a new gaming headset, mainly for PC. Based on my price range ($100) I've narrowed it down to the HyperX cloud (one or pro, not sure yet. Apparently the only difference between the 1 and cloud 2 is the inline 7.1 control and not worth the extra cash). While I'd love wireless, my budget just won't go far enough as far as quality, so I've settled on a wired set.

That said, my research has shown that buying a good pair of headphones and a boom mic is actually the best way to stretch your dollar in terms of quality.

Does anyone have any advice in this department? It makes sense that "gaming headsets" are priced and marketed towards people won't necessarily compare those to quality "audio headphones".

I've owned Sony Golds, Turtle Beach x11's and XP500's in recent years so this is MY first time actually doing research outside of the normal brands of headsets.

Any advice or input is appreciated. My lower budget will probably drag the recommendations down considering there are really good but pricey options out there, but this is where I am. Thanks again!

                      HyperX Headsets - $79 - $99

                      Headphones + Mic - $85

Edit: wow I posted all that before reading previous post's... going back and checking what you've all written, some really good stuff in this thread!

Yea... I always read before posting. For some reason I figured my predicament wouldn't be common. Not only is it common but people are asking about the same pieces of hardware I'm asking about!

I'm still torn though. So much info to take it.

Really looking for the best headphone + mic combo for around $100.

Thanks again Phobia. Pretty sure I spent more time at work today researching headphones than I did getting any work done. Likely ordering those Philips tonight.

I was really hoping to find something at the local Sam Ash or Guitar Center that I could pickup. Wasn't to be.
