Correct. The Atmos app works the same as any other simulated surround sound included in gaming headset settings, amps such as mixAmp, Windows Sonic, etc. The sound is processed digitally to simulate Atmos sound in any stereo headset. They only have the left and right speakers but with the sound being processed with Atmos it alters it to make sounds "sound" like they are behind, above, etc.

Just pay for the app which does the encoding for you. Plug any headset into the 3.5mm jack on your controller. Or if you have a headset with a base that uses toslink or HDMI for the sound, check the box in the xbox audio settings and it will encode the sound coming from there. The app can be used on 10 devices I believe, so you can use it on your Windows 10 PC too the same way.

      Re: Gaming headsets

Do yourself a favor and avoid all simulated surround sound for gaming. Enjoy that for movies or maybe story based games where precision isn't required. A solid 2 channel open back headphone will blow away any surround sound processor.

If you play competitive shooters like PUBG, Apex, BF5, COD4 blackout, etc you will be at a disadvantage to stereo users. I frequently play with people using gaming surround sound headsets and their audio placement is far behind my setup. I'm always baffled how off the compass bearing is for call outs of distant shots or the range it appears to them. While my audio is precise enough I can tell you exactly from 300 meters a gun shot rang out in PUBG. I'm not meaning just direction, no the specific tree they are leaning out from firing. My depth and distance is much more accurate when compared to the gaming headsets.

Sure, you can easily compete and it won't feel "wrong" unless you wore quality 2 ch THEN switched on the surround. I'd challenge anyone to wear my setup for an hour, then let me switch on the surround sound processor, you would be floored how inaccurate audio placement will be with it. I believe people just don't know any better but all software based processors I've tried suck in comparison.

Rant rant rant, but I've fought the surround sound battle a long time and it drove me nuts. As of now I can't give up the audio precision I enjoy every night with my current setup.

The only reason I bring this up, I'm tired of fielding call outs of "65 north east!" when the accurate one is "90 east, 50 yards, behind the small rock crouched". [emoji12][emoji12][emoji12]

If you use your Xbox for Netflix, several shows use atmos, too.

For anyone browsing this looking for headphones, I have the SteelSeries Arctis 3 and I really like them. Trying out Dolby Atmos but considering the Actics 3 is designed for full compatibility with Windows Sonic, i dont notice a huge difference.

Games that are made for Atmos and feature positional sound are not inaccurate and actually feature pinpoint sound. Now maybe the games not made for it that people are using a sound modifier is what you speak of.

Once you play Assassin's Creed Origins or the new Forza in Atmos you will never want to go back to regular stereo.

You need to play them with games actually supporting Atmos, of which there aren't many unfortunately

Exactly...and thanks everyone in this thread for all the info! Excited to eventually get it but right now I don't have anything I'm playing that would use it.

Just started playing division 2 and noticed it sounded better than normal through my headphones... so i just looked it up and it does in fact support Dolby Atmos. I guess now I know how good it is.

My hyperx cloud 2 crapped out on me so I picked up the cloud alphas. I hear it's what the 2k e-league players uses.

I’d like to get my son a good wireless PS4 headset for the PS4. Under $200. I like the Sony headsets but he refuses to use them since he doesn’t like the mic. Having a good microphone with good microphone volume controls is the biggest priority for him. So many PC sets don’t have good volume controls for PS4. Read bad things about Turtle Beach. Everything seems to have a flaw. Any recommendations?

Edit: Going with the Arctis7 one. Good reviews. Just wish chat mixing was available for PS4.

I will never buy a Hyper X headset again. Got one and quit working in less than 3 months. Replacement quit after a month. It was very comfortable and had great sound but after that they gave me my money back. Will give credit for great customer service but I won’t bother giving them a third try.

Strange as their items are usually good and I have had a few of them and never had issues.

The Artics are fine as well
