I only go after achievements if I've beaten a game already and I like it enough to go through it multiple times.

That was FIFA 10, actually, and it's a 0 point achievement. Basically, it signals that anyone you see with it is a bad loser/poor sport.

I don't see the harm. I actually like that one.

And it also shows the people who are sad enough to do that just to get an achievement.

There are times now where I'll be playing a game and find myself doing something ridiculously repetitive just to get a trophy. Then I'll realize I'm having no fun at all and I'll ask myself, "why the hell am I doing this?" A recent example was playing the same gang hideout over and over and over in Red Dead Redemption just to get a lot of XP so I could get the trophy for hitting the top rank in multiplayer.

I really hate them in sports games. I used to love playing years and years and years in franchise mode, now if I get all of the trophies (like I did within a month of getting Madden), I have a hard time playing the game anymore.

I do think they are great for adding longevity to certain titles, but most of the time they just make me play average or mediocre games longer than I should, or do ridiculously tedious tasks in awesome games that I should be enjoying but eventually come to despise.
I had a moment like you had with RDR and achievements with NBA 2k7. It's such an empty pursuit. If you are not playing for the enjoyment of the game then really what are you doing? I was chasing these achievements and actually had a vision of me on my deathbed remembering all the time I wasted chasing achievements lol. Since then I don't even look at them. If one pops up while I'm playing then sometimes I pause the game just to see what it was for but thats it.

I'm basically like that now. I still love achievements, and I still go for achievements, but I don't waste my life away doing them. I've put almost 3 days gametime into COD online, there's no achievements for that, but I'm playing for the fun instead of grabbing crappy games to boost my score. Life is too short, and I'm damned if I'm playing crappy games over and over for an achievement. If the game sucks, I move on.

Well if I'm playing RDR and doing regular and side missions, it's to beat the game but it's for fun as well. If after there are some trophies to complete, I'll also do it for fun. The day I quit playing video games is the day I stop having fun playing them. I don't play games to beat them, I do because I love them. Sometimes I love beating them though, too... that incentive keeps me going, like trophies.

Playing NBA 2k7 on rookie level by myself with 2 controllers so I could get 10 blocked shots with Shaq is a little different. I'm embarrassed just thinking that I actually did that lol.

Exactly how I feel. I'll always check what the achievement is for and have a little bit of happiness inside if I did something good. But then I move on, and don't worry about what other achievements I could get.

At least, with Donkey Kong for example, if it DID have trophies, people on my friends list could go "hey cool, he completed 100% of that game". Does it mean anything? Obviously not, but it's still a neat little way to kind of see what you're friends are up to, etc.

There's no reason NOT to have them, other than simply "****, I wish we ha thought of that, so let's make up some deeper meaning as to why we didn't." haha.
Sony did this same thing for the Rumble-less controllers when the PS3 first came out. lol. PR move.

If the trophy descriptions would be unlocked after you beat a game, maybe I would make a concerted effort to obtain more of them.

I agree with this, Ryan. I love trophies but at the same time I hate that I have a hard time going back to games when I get a Platinum or whatev. As much fun as NBA2k My Player is....I know when I have all the trophies unlocked associated with that mode I won't touch it again. I've also have a hard time going back to RDR since I got the Plat for it. Even though there are still many online trophies for me to unlock.

Same here. I will go for some achievements, usually if it sounds like fun trying to grab, e.g. GTA IV pop a wheelie for (don't remember the exact distance) amount of feet. I won't try for things that are like COD, beat x mission on x difficulty, because I know it won't be fun. One playthrough of the campaign is enough for me, let alone one mission on a stupidly hard difficulty.

Most of the achievements I get unintentionally, as I'll just be playing the game and I'll do something that warrants the achievement which is fine by me.
