Somewhat crazy thought:

The only way to emulate a 3DS-like revival would be to drop the tablet from the base product and sell it separately. Less emphasis on the tablet the way the 3DS has less emphasis on 3D.

Otherwise, their uphill climb is impeded by competition from Sony and MS, while the primary competition for the 3DS was the previous SKUs people had no reason to move on from.

The only way to get a 2+ console environment like Wii60, PSWii of last gen is to make it affordable to do so, and that won't happen with the tablet.

I'd probably consider getting a $99-$150 Wii U for my son if I had the option later to buy a $99-150 tablet.

There are a lot of reasons to not do this, but it's just a thought.

Interesting points. I tend to agree, but I doubt they'd cut out the tablet (too late at this point).

It is just somewhat expensive for a more "niche" system IMO. I have trouble justifying a purchase (especially due to the lack of games).

With the 3DS it has the portable nature, but if we're fighting for the living room there's just nothing going for WiiU right now.

The back of the boxes already indicate if a tablet controller is used, though not sure if current games indicate the difference between required and just able to use.

Maybe the Wii U will catch lightening in a bottle again when they drop WiiU Fit extreme. There are just so many self inflicted wounds by Nintendo with the WiiU. Its gonna take some amazing titles to gain them the traction they had at a point with the Wii.

I worry about what will happen to them when the next gen consoles hit full stride.

I'm a little disappointed in Nintendo right now. I'm okay with waiting on some big releases, but the fact that they canceled their E3 conference is a major bummer to me. They are missing a chance to take a chunk of the momentum that Sony and Microsoft have by announcing a new Mario or Zelda.

They are basically playing a doormat here, and giving Sony and Microsoft the opportunity to walk all over them. As someone who bought a Wii U around launch, it's really disheartening to see Nintendo fall flat like they have so far. And the thing is, I LOVE the console. I like the controller, I like the interface, and I really like the web capabilities. There is just nothing in the line of games that interest me right now.

Ever since the new Xbox presentation, Wiiu sales have spike and Nintendo fans are salivating on the prospect of seeing this come true ...

Next Nintendo Direct is set to arrive on June 11, the day after the competition big conferences. It is expected to touch upon some highly anticipated WiiU games, such as:

3D Mario platformer
Super Smash Bros. 4
Sonic Lost World from SEGA
what Retro Studios has been up to
Xenoblade II
the Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker remake
Mario Kart Wii U
Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 by Platinum
Yoshi's Epic Yarn
and the unannounced!

Have to admit that is an imprssive list indeed.

Have to admit. If WiiU had Madden, GTA, and WWE then I would probably go that route right now instead.

Sonic Lost World channels Super Mario Galaxy

Sega and Nintendo's recently announced collaboration Sonic Lost World has shown off its first gameplay in its debut trailer below.

Exclusive to IGN, this first look at Sonic's upcoming adventure bears more than a passing resemblance to the Super Mario Galaxy series - with its stages comprised of rotating spheres, cylinders, and side-on platforming - but given that those are two of the most highly acclaimed 3D platformers out there, that's not exactly a bad thing.

Nintendo recalling white basic Wii U units presumably to refurb them into a new bundle like the white version of the deluxe which was already announced in Japan.
