I don't understand how some will say the Wii is/was a gimmick and that parents are blind in getting their kids the console.
We are talking about Nintendo here. The same company that is introducing gaming to kids these days introduced it to kids in the 80's, and they did a great job of it. Our Wii was given to us. I never intended on getting one, but my sons love getting on it and messing around. My oldest is 7 and he prefers the Xbox but still, he enjoys Mario Kart etc.
There are tons of kids still enjoying the Wii. What's so odd about that? How is the Wii's success any different than other consoles that had success?Comment

Re: New Nintendo Console in 2012?
IGN: We Built Nintendo's Project Cafe
Based on the information we received and with help from our sources, we found retail PC components comparable to the ones Nintendo is expected to use in their new system and built a mock console of our own.
Though the system will obviously look considerably different and the OS and games will be new and optimized, we wanted to get a taste of the raw power of the hardware by testing performance with recent current-gen titles.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Yeah, it's hard to discount Nintendo. Also, people are just assuming Microsoft and Sony are going to go all out again with bleeding edge tech and are willing to be in the red for years, which I don't believe is a certainty at all.
If the custom GPU is the equivalent of a 4850, while not a generational leap, it would be capable of showing a very noticeable difference - the clockspeed and bus would have to be crippled for it not to. Benchmarking unoptimized PC ports doesn't come close to telling you what would be capable in a closed architecture. But then how big is the performance hit going to be for the touch-screen controller?Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: New Nintendo Console in 2012?
The price of the system and its controller will be what makes or breaks it early on. Looking at the graphics, they are slightly better, but are they good enough to make the average gamer want to upgrade from their PS3 or Xbox 360? I don't think so, but maybe it could. The controller is going to bring something new, but will it be as good as motion controls? I think that is the key to this new system.
Also, they have to do a serious upgrade regarding their online capabilities. If that doesn't improve enough (I'm sure they will work on it some a least), could they drag away a big enough part of the large online gaming communities the other systems have built?Originally posted by BlueNGoldI feel weird for liking a post about exposed penises.Comment

Re: New Nintendo Console in 2012?
^ I would take that graphics comparison with a grain of salt... they are testing it using games that are essentially ps3/360 ports. What will tell the real story is when we see something that was designed for the Wii2 itself.Comment

True. One thing I am interested to see is how Nintendo's games they make themselves look. The only two I can really see with realistic graphics would be Zelda & Metroid. I know there are a bunch of other art styles out there, it will just be interesting to see what they do with characters like Mario or Kirby.Originally posted by BlueNGoldI feel weird for liking a post about exposed penises.Comment

Re: New Nintendo Console in 2012
Wii U Graphics
Slowly, but surely, we're starting to piece together what's going on inside that mysterious white box known as the Wii U. IBM was a little coy about the multi-core CPU it was providing, but did tantalize us by mentioning the name "Watson" in describing some of its underlying tech. Now details about the custom Radeon GPU are starting to surface and, while certainly capable, it's not exactly cutting edge. At its heart is a chip similar to the R770 found in AMD's last-gen cards like the 4890 and, before you dismiss it, remember the PS3 and Xbox 360 are still capable of pumping out impressive visuals while packing five-year-old silicon (The 360 is essentially running a souped up ATI X1900). The custom core also supports Direct X 10.1 (Microsoft runs out of steam with Direct X 9) and Eyefinity-like multi-display tech for up to four SD video streams -- though it'll be up to Nintendo and developers to put that to good use. In case you're still not convinced of the Wii U's graphical prowess, Crytek has said its advanced CryEngine is "pretty much" up and running on Nintendo's upcoming console -- and, if it's good enough for Crysis, it should be good enough for you.Comment

Re: New Nintendo Console in 2012
The thing about the Wii U's graphical power is that they seem to be proud of have a more powerful console than consoles that came out 6 and years ago. Based on what we know of the hardware in the Wii U, it looks like Sony and MS's new consoles will probably blow the Wii U out of the water in terms of hardware which could mean that Nintendo will have similar third party issues as they do this generation once the new consoles from MS and Sony come out.Comment
