Any of y'all play Arma 3? I bought it a few sales ago and decided I want to give it a whirl. I know there is a "boot camp" mode now, but any other advice for a beginner? I also plan to read the tactical guide it came with as well.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Well this is crap, looks like Nvidia will not be able to address the 3.5 gb vram on the 970.
As much as I want to wait for the new batch of cards to drop, I'm unsure if the 560ti will allow me to do that. 290x might be in my future or if a 970 price drop hits quick because of the false marketing.
I know I'm trying to wait for the the 300 series but damn, this $279(after $30 rebate) 290X is making it damn hard to sit still this morning. That's one hell of a deal right there.PS: You guys are great.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Considering just a year ago they were close to 500 bucks......Yeaaaaaa!!!!! I just can't shake the damn power requirements, because I have this feeling Nvidia is going to drop the 970 price quick or release the TI version soon to recover with a full 4gig from the 3.5 debacle.I know I'm trying to wait for the the 300 series but damn, this $279(after $30 rebate) 290X is making it damn hard to sit still this morning. Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Still mad the prices skyrocketed like they did last year. Ended up with a 280x for $320+ in the end, but I had my eye on the 290x when it first released for around the same price.Originally posted by BlueNGoldI feel weird for liking a post about exposed penises.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
So I'm having a strange issue which I didn't have enough time to troubleshoot but wanted to see what you guys thought. I'm stuck here at work, trying to put together a gameplan for when I get home.
So I throw in my Z97 Fatality mobo, I5 4690k, and 8 ram last night. I reformat my hard drive and do a fresh install of win7 professional. This way I can really see the speed of my new proc.
Once I get the OS installed, it boots to the desktop and loads fully in 19 secs. So I thought, not bad. I then install the mobo drivers and reboot. Everything boots up just as fast and looks to be working correctly. I then throw in my video card drivers and webroot virus protection, reboots and boots the same speed.
This is where the problem comes in, so I start installing the windows updates. Pops up 189 updates needed, it goes through downloading them and requires a restart. Upon the reboot it boots into the windows "1 of 5 updates installing". It then gets to 5 of 5 with 32% installed and hangs there for over 2 hours. I finally have to cut the power supply off and force a reboot. ***Pretty sure this is what caused the issue. Faulty install or something***
Now every time it boots it loads into this and does different strange things. It might show the 5 of 5 with 100% and hang for 5 min then boot into the desktop, it has shown a error then boots into a solid black desktop, or it has booted normal. This occurs throughout a dozen reboots trying to see if windows update would correct the issue.
Now every time it boots my processors is just loaded down. It went from running extremely fast before the windows updates, to being a flat out crawl with cpu usage in the 50% range constantly with nothing running. So I hit up performance monitor and task manager to see what was causing the problem. It looks to be a svhost process is just eating almost 2 full cores of the cpu.
So what do you guys feel is the best route to correct this?
Right now this is where I lie
1) Uninstall all windows updates, reboot to see if back to running fine, then try reinstalling windows updates
2) Say the hell with it and do a fresh win7 install. Hopefully windows updates does not hang and cause this issue again.Last edited by Phobia; 02-04-2015, 09:34 AM.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Still have any pending windows updates? Could try and run http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...Readiness-Tool first and then see if that helps get whatever installed and clear things up.
Otherwise yeah, I'd be reinstalling windows (though I'd probably go w/ Win10 preview over 7 tbh)Comment

I also been thinking about it and just going to clean install again tonight. The hang had to cause a corrupt file somewhere. So rather than beat my head in for a while it is easier just to use my flash drive while I'm at work, get all my drivers downloaded that way tonight just reinstall win7. Then load all my drivers real fast, throw in the system readiness tool, THEN install all the windows updates.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Yeah I kept having a similar issue with windows 8 install after the bsod and eventually it boiled down to not being able to get past the memory. The memory was bad in mine. ..at least one of the sticks but that's the exact issue that happens when it can't make it through.
I'm pretty sure it was a corrupted install for you and should work fine the next time over.Comment

Is there a legal way to get it free? lolI got Win 7 Professional 64 free so I'm just going to run with it.

I have my older (but still ok, was a gaming rig) laptop that I want to wipe and get loaded with Windows 7 so it can go to 10 for free when that drops.
We have MSDN at work, but it's suspended until a co-worker passes a test lol, so can't get a 7 or 8 license through that for a bit and was just wondering.
Would love to get that PC wiped so XP is deadNintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Yea we get almost any program we need from our university. I'm a IT major so setting up servers, VMs, and any other type of configuration, we need to have access to the software. Is there a legal way to get it free? lol

I've seen some odd things and this issue was one of them. I went home at lunch to grab my flashdrive. So I boot the PC and everything loads perfect. Restart to make sure it was not a fluke and sure enough perfect again. I'm not sure where the problem was, something hung in memory maybe? That does not make sense to me since my memory usage was in the normal range of 1.2 gigs.....anyway, no idea but everything seems good to go now.
Installed steam, downloaded DayZ really fast and ran a data collector set to monitor the CPU usage. I then started up DayZ and was quick to notice the graphic settings are much higher off the bat. So I load into a world and everything running so much smoother even with higher graphic settings (didn't change video card). I figured my old Q6600 and DDR2 ram was the bottle neck but this just confirmed it.
I then exit to go check out the data from the proc. 1 CPU was in the 90% usage range most of the time, while the other 3 cpus sat in the 30% range. So everything looks normal from what I can tell.
I'm going to grab a new WD blue tonight, make a system image, and transfer that over to a new faster HD. Last thing will be ordering my video card in next couple weeks or so depending on what Nvidia does about the 970.Last edited by Phobia; 02-04-2015, 01:46 PM.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Definitely in the memory Phobia.
I really want to upgrade from my 7850 to a 7950 at least to even more comfortably run things even better. Could be my power supply at around 750w though? 2k is still jumpy after that last patchComment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
If it was, that was a strange issue. Took a cold boot to dump the ram and get everything back to running as intended.
750w power supply is plenty unless you running SLI with some power hungry cards, but just a single 970 or in your case a AMD card with a 750w PS is plenty of juice.Comment
