I've also seen it mentioned in the review section of nearly every 970 card I've looked at on Newegg.

As for AMD driver issues, I have to say that fortunately, I haven't had any. At least, none that were so traumatic as to make me swear off the brand completely. Every system and user is different though. I'm not an AMD fanboy or anything, I've used both brands with little issue and imagine I will continue to do so as long as they are there to compete for my dollars.

I'll check out the links in second.

As for as mobo, I'm looking to stay under $100 for a feature-less mobo. I know I can get little higher in with 7:1 surround, more usb 3.0 ports than I'll ever need, and HDMI adapters I'll never need for the $130+ range. I'm thinking a ASRock barebones in the 80 buck range would suffice. Your thoughts Rob?

Yeah the Z97M Pro4 looks like a good choice if you're cool with micro ATX.

Yea I looked at that card today but would rather a regular ATX. Worst case, I'll run with a micro

Thanks for picking me up Trob

Phobia, you can also Google anything with the words GTX 970 and memory issue/allocation. This was a huge issue at first with new games (NBA 2k15, etc.) and I haven't heard whether or not it was/wasn't fixed.

Take a look at the MSI Z97 PC Mate if you want a decent ATX motherboard with all the features anyone needs (imho). Its under $100 and offers enough room for upgrades to RAM, extra PCI cards, etc..

Yeah, the memory allocation issue is still there with the 970. It is very disappointing considering that Nvidia marketed this as a 4GB card except you are getting 3.5GB and then .5 GB of very slow *** RAM. I'm already hitting that 3.5GB wall with my card playing Mordor.

I contacted Newegg to see if I can get a refund on my MSI 970 as I'm considering now just forking over the extra $200 to jump on the 980. I'd like to go with the 980 but then its like spending $200+ more for only a bit more power and rewarding these clowns with another purchase based off of their lies. I've always bought Nvidia based cards so it always pulls me to buying their cards.

I considered the 290X as a stopgap till all of the next gen hardware releases, but that card isn't perfect either. I have a G10 to water cool it but the damn card is a power hog. I've tried a few AMD cards in the past and just didn't care for certain aspects with their cards, but the 970 BS is annoying.

I'm not sure that even a 290X would be worth it at this point, even though I have a Kraken G10 on the MSI which would work on the 290X. I started noticing tons of stuttering last week when I bought a 4K TV and I tried to run Mordor even with my settings a bit dialed down @ 4K.

970's are great cards, just think the 3.5GB is gonna be an issue in a years time and what about those with Skyrim that probably have a ton of mods loaded, they have to be hitting that ceiling. We should of had cards out by now in 6GB and 8GB flavors considering higher texture counts, etc. in the future upcoming games.

Yeah CaptainZombie, now is not a great time to buy AMD in particular with the new-gen stuff seemingly right around the corner. Even if you're likely to stick with Nvidea I'd recommend to wait and see. New tech and price drops are incoming any day now. That's what I keep telling myself anyway.

Yea ive been running the 290x around in my head but the 970 still out paces it. Plus like you said I hate the power consumption. Im thinking of just riding the 560ti out for little longer and see if they either fix the 970 or release the new cards to drive down the 980 price.

I'm thinking about upgrading to 4k when I get my tax return. Right now I have a GTX 680 Classified (4GB)

I'm thinking if I want to play 4k with good settings I will probably need to get another 680 and run them in SLI.

Does anyone have any 4k experience for gaming? I like to play sports games and fast moving games so it will bother me if it isn't 60 FPS, will my plan work?

EDIT: My other plan if that won't work is to get a pair of BenQ monitors. I'm thinking of going for some of the gaming edition ones and the 27" ones would be too much for a pair. I'm thinking of dropping to the 24" ones does anyone have experience with that?

SLI will never be a full 100% frame increase. Its more like 60 to 70%, so if you are getting say 25 fps in 4k on a game with one 680, you might see 35 to 45 (fps) after you add a second. My point is don't expect a doubling of your frames per second. Honestly, I'd say the 680 SLI is a waste for a 4k experience, hell two 4gb 680s SLI struggled to hit 45 fps in Battlefield 3 which is a old title.

I'm not a big fan of the graphic card landscape at the moment. Cards really need to have 6 to 8 gb of memory to effectively support the current resolutions. Yet those cards are in the $1,000 dollar range, while newly released cards such as the GTX 960 only having 2gb makes the cards life extremely short.

Now I'm also not a fan of SLI because of the problems it brings. Shelling out for a single powerful GPU is a better option in my opinion.

Well this is crap, looks like Nvidia will not be able to address the 3.5 gb vram on the 970.

While initially it was reported NVIDIA would be releasing a special driver to address some of the problems with the GTX 970's memory issues, NVIDIA later retracted that statement as the problems with the card are hardware based and not able to be remedied with a software solution.

If you've purchased a GTX 970 based on NVIDIA's false advertising, AMD has dropped the price of their R9 290X card. AMD is offering discounts for those who had previously purchased a GTX 970.
As much as I want to wait for the new batch of cards to drop, I'm unsure if the 560ti will allow me to do that. 290x might be in my future or if a 970 price drop hits quick because of the false marketing.
