Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

Alright fellas, critique my build that's coming. I'm using my Intel 530 240GB SSD for the build, so no need to buy the HD or the OS.

Silverstone Tek Mini-ITX DTX Computer Case with PCI-E Riser ML07B
Silverstone Tek 600W Fully Modular Active Power Supply SX600-G

    MSI A88XI AC FM2+ / FM2 AMD A88X (Bolton D4) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Mini ITX AMD Motherboard
    AMD Athlon X4 860K Quad-Core 3.7GHz Socket FM2+ 95W Desktop Processor (BLACK EDITION) AD860KXBJABOX
    HyperX FURY 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 Desktop Memory Model HX318C10F/8
Panasonic UJ-265 Slim 6X Blu-ray Writer SATA (Slot Load)
EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card

I know, I know... AMD Build with a NVidia GPU. Right now, I'm pretty happy with the HTPC build. I've not ordered the 980 yet, but will at some point this week. The motherboard has the built in wifi.

Does anyone use Steam OS? I was thinking of giving it a try. Dual boot Win7 and Steam OS.

Looks like HTC and Value just announced another headset partnership today. I am interested and glad to see a lot more development this time around, but I just see it failing like in the past.

This is why it will fail again. Consumers will be splintered and fail to get behind the push. Lack of good content could also doom it.

No, not much point really IMO. You can just start Steam in big picture mode. The OS effort has been a relative failure.

I had originally planned to update the Alpha with it, but from all the feedback from others that have tested it, they say it hurt performance compared to running Windows. I use the desktop mode for emulation anyway, so I think I will stand pat and go the Windows 10 route as I hear it has boosted performance for the Alpha from those in the access program.

So Steam VR is a partnership with HTC, and has optional tracking bases to let you interact with a 15x15 area.

Dev kit this spring, consumer version by the end of the year.

Hopefully this pushes the other companies, but I'm not buying a 2nd console or anything for this...

They need a way that works cross console IMO. Or for me I'd consider something integrated with Xbox One (and maybe MS is working on that? who knows) since that's what I own now, but IMO this technology needs to be proven before I buy it. Not wasting money on crap tech demos.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

I can play Elite: Dangerous right now with an Oculus Rift. That's my starter drug, that'd make a purchase worthwhile. The rest is gravy, but the gravy is what will sell my wife, etc.

Those VERY nice to haves, to borderline requirements depending on what the consumer pricing of these peripherals are:

                    - Compatibility. I'm not expecting The Vive or the Rift to work on consoles, my concern here is will there be support for them and other competitors VR headsets or are we going to have a war of 'Vive Compatible' and 'Rift Compatible' software. If so welcome to niche of niche status.

                    - Price. As close to impulse buy territory is helpful, of course.

                    - Future proofing. Would prefer not to have a quasi-obsolete model by fall 2016 when 2.0 comes out.

I had a couple more but lost them, but you get my gist.

I expect MS's HoloLens to have Xbox and PC uses, but not sure how far out it is and it's not VR, it's AR (augmented reality) - a different class of product altogether. I don't expect Sony's Morpheus to work on anything but the PS4, that's just how they operate.

I never thought aside from price that someone could get me to buy games on a regular basis outside of Steam.

Cross buy with Xbox One and Windows 10 could change that in a really big way if pricing is competitive.

Note to self, prior to building a mini itx computer, make sure that the board supports the cpu without a bios update.

Those mini itx builds are no joke. Zero room. Had to order an app for cheap to update the bios to finish my build. Waiting for my Bootable usb to finish right now.

Will have to tare apart and install the other cpu in a day or two.

The case is a tad larger than I expected, but man... no room to work lol.

I don't understand the design of the steam controller. Why is the D-Pad and what ever that is on the right side so big ? And the controller itself looks like a backwards 360 controller. Doesn't look like it would feel comfortable in your hands at all.

Yeah, unless I get to use one first I'll probably just movie forward with buying a One controller from my PC when my old wired 360 controller dies.
