I shouldn't be saying this...
I wasn't allowed to play video games on weekdays when I lived with my parents during my K-12 school years, so on a Sunday night when I had this intense Interplay Sports Baseball 2000 (PSX) season game going, I had to leave the disc spinning until I could find an opportune time during the week to get in some time to finish. I was able to finish it by Wednesday, but after I turned off the system, the next time I tried to turn it on the laser had trouble reading discs.
My PlayStation no longer worked.
Upon buying an Xbox, I returned a few games here and there, as well as my PSX console. I said "If they take it, they take it." The guy was about to test it, but all of his outlets in his power strip were taken. He said, "Screw it... it works, right bud?" I just went, "Mmmhmmm." Boom. Ninety bucks.
Bottom line is, they check if they can. This guy didn't bother, and I lucked out. There are exigent circumstances in which they'll just accept the return.
