My ps4 is on the main floor, router is in the basement.
Here is what I found out after messing with it a bit...

-If you have directly connect with vita checked, that seems to be the ONLY way it will connect. When it was checked I was unable to connect through the internet, and if i was out of range of my ps4 signal but in range of my router, it was unable to find it as well.

-Direct connect: works perfectly to use vita as a 2nd controller, or if playing from a fairly short distance (maybe 20-30 feet at the most), and not through any thick walls or floors.

-If Direct Connect causes problems, uncheck to hopefully get a better connection through your LAN (internet speed doesn't matter, it only is sending signals back and forth through the router.) I have a wireless N router so even on the 2nd floor i get a pretty good signal strength and can play pretty much lag free. There would be an occasional hitch but pretty flawless the majority of the time.

So if you have direct connect checked and you are having issues, you must be towards the outer reach of the ps4 signal. If it isnt checked and you are then playing through your LAN, you might need a new router? Wireless N should get you the strongest/fastest signal for Vita and PS4. If you don't have a wireless N i would suggest that.

-Side note on playing over the internet...low bandwidth doesnt seem to matter as much as ping (maybe obvious to some, but i never thought about it until trying remote play.) On my phones hotspot (verizon 4G, 15-20mbps up and 30-60ms ping) i usually get a bit of input lag, but the graphics are crisp. on my works open wifi (1.8mbps up and 14ms ping) i get absolutely lag free controls, however with the lower bandwidth the graphics sometimes get a bit pixelated, especially when in fast motion.

I'd take $100 extra for mine but no interest even for that really. Will probably just send it back to Amazon.

I'm still waiting for the inevitable Christmas rush when stores don't have anything left.

But, at worse, I end up giving it to my brother for Christmas.

a few people have given a few pointers on what to press, but i think some have different controls selected.

            Default-
            1 press - share menu
            2 press - start recording
press and hold - take picture

            alternate-
            1 press - take picture
            2 press - start recording
press and hold - share menu

so for the controls - (I might not be 100% correct, but this is how i belive the controls to have worked for me)
TAKE PICTURE - this will save the current screen image
TAKE VIDEO - sets the start point for the recording in memory. it is always the last 15 minutes, but you can reset that with this control.
SHARE MENU - this saves the current screen shot as well as the current recording in memory.

so if you have been playing 2k for a while, use the SHARE MENU option and it will save a video of the last 15 minutes. if running a play for a last second shot or something and want to save a video...when it is done you can use SHARE MENU and a 15 minute video will be saved, with that play being the very end of it. or right before the play, you can TAKE VIDEO to start the recording point there, and after the play press SHARE MENU which will save the recording from the starting point you set.

The controllers lose charge rapidly... Going to get a longer usb charge cable so i can charge and play when needed without having to be too close to the tv.

Yeah, my only complaint. I read that the controller lasts 9 hours on IGN before the system came out, but my controller seems to drain much faster than that.

Not a big deal, as I can easily have it connected to the PS4 with how my little room is set up.

I agree. Luckily I already had a usb extension cable. I think it's a must have with this DS4.

Thanks for this, this is pretty much a perfect rundown of how it all works. I know I was a little confused at first.

Dumped mine for $600 on the night of release. Seeing this makes me feel better. Only downside being I didn't have a second PS4 to keep. At least you were able to pick up a camera for your wife with the extra money.
