yes touchscreen is used on different types of games. I'd originally have thought, throwaway tech, but I've come to enjoy the Vita/Touch Pad/Screen experience a lot more than I thought I would have.
For example :Uncharted, when you find some of the heiroglyphics or artifacts, you uncover them by wiping them off on the screen. There's some things such as taking pictures that you move the Vita around and focus using the back touch pad. It is also implemented in some of the hand to hand combat cut scenes using different swipes. Also locks and such can be turned with touch. That's an action game that I think the touch controls actually did make things a little more enjoyable imo, which was suprising to me because I thought it would be a gimmick that I'd rather use just buttons - Which I still use buttons a lot , but do find myself actually use the touch pad controls
LBP uses it, a new Tearaway game will use it as a vital part of the game. The Fifa games use it for passing or shooting accuracy. Those are just few examples off the top of my head where it does get used and may add to the game.
As far as menus and things like that go, it's very useful to just swipe forward or back to go from current menu to previous , etc. So I can see it used there as well rather than buttons
