Why wouldn't you run the optical output from the Pro directly to your receiver? Hook the HDMI to your TV but skip the audio middle man. Some TV optical outputs don't handle the 5.1 properly or even support it. Just let your receiver handle that directly.

Only reason he might not want to do this is if he also uses other devices that run through optical, and he only has one optical input. Otherwise, this is definitely the best approach.

True. He could be using the TV as his audio output hub and sending all audio from there to the receiver but that's definitely not desirable if you can avoid it.

I use ARC on my setup. The only limitations to ARC is that it's only 5.1 but you won't have to replace your AV receiver. My receiver doesn't support HDR, but it does 4K so using ARC was my only option if I wanted to get 4k HDR and surround sound or buy a new receiver. I just just bought my receiver last year too so it kinda sucks.

I have an Xbox one S that is my main media device. I use the cable pass through on that and I'll be using that for 4k movies. I thought optical to my receiver would be the best way to go. I'll have to look into it more.

Sony has failed in putting two HDMI out ports (one for audio) on their consoles since it has been rumored in the PS3 era way way back. Hopefully they will do this with the PS5 when they have a UHD BD drive in there as well.

I wonder if there are nice expensive HDMI splitters that can passthrough 4K and HDR.

I have an Onkyo TX-NR646, works well with my Samsung KS8000, PS4 Pro and Xbox One S.

Thanks Dan, I love the looks of this one, seems quite similar to mine which is the TX-NR609 if my memory serves...I've bookmarked this puppy on Amazon and will revisit in a couple of months.

EDIT: Another bonus for this one, looks EXACTLY like my current Onkyo, I could swap this out and the wife would never even know..BWAHAHAHAHAHA

So I got my PS4 Pro and put my HDMI cable away in a package marked HDMI PS4 PRO cable to run it to my 4K tv when I get one (in the meantime I am just using the 1.4 cable I have already run to the tv).

So this got me thinking, how do I tell old HDMI cables from 2.0 ones??? Is there a pin or something you can look at and tell what version it is?

Physically they look the same but the ratings would be on the wire itself.
