Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
HDR makes the blacks blacker because it makes the whites and bright colors brighter. In other words, a lamp post in a dark alley would really shine because that's where the emphasis is.
For non-HDR games, I have brightness at 25 (50%), contrast at 100 (100%). Sharpness is at 70 (70%) for both non-HDR and HDR games. For HDR games, I still have contrast at 100 (100%) but my tv automatically adjusts the brightness to 50 (100%) when detecting an HDR source.
When done correctly like in Horizon: Zero Dawn, HDR is truly a game changer. Once you get adjusted and used to it, you'll wish every game had it correctly implemented.
Watch Dogs 2 seems to be more laid back and relaxed. I have only played the tutorial and is in my backlog of games to play. Between this and Mafia III, I ended up playing Mafia III simply because the story, characters, soundtrack, locale, atmosphere and immersion interested me a lot more than Watch Dogs 2. My friend played about halfway in WD2 and then had his save get corrupted and he was done. He actually enjoyed the original WD more than what he played in WD2 simply because he didn't like any of the characters, the story or that it simply wasn't "serious". Say compared to Mafia III which is dead serious in regards to the story and characters.
WD2 definitely looks better visually but I personally can't say if the game is good or bad because I only played the tutorial. Mafia III is currently my 2016 game of the year surpassing Gears of War 4 and Uncharted 4. The gameplay isn't as good but the story, characters, music soundtrack, locale, atmosphere and immersion are in my opinion the best of 2016.Comment

This is kind of a general console post, but does apply to PS4 directly:
Do you guys kind of feel the same way I do regarding this console generation kind of making strides and "coming into it's own" the past 9-12 months.
Between the beauty of games like UC4 and Horizon on PS4, the Play Anywhere program from MS (playing Gears 4, ReCore, and Forza on my PC with some Xbox Live functionality was just awesome), and playing a game of Zelda's caliber (best launch game ever IMO) on a little handheld console I can take anywhere easily, it just seems like we are really moving right now. 4k and HDR implementation (I know it's not true 4k in many cases, but still) is a welcome addition to console gaming as well.
I really wasn't blown away by either the One or PS4 at launch. I liked them both and the first couple years there were definitely good games that I loved playing, but it really stepped up for me this past year or so, and seems to be moving upward and onward every month now. I remember playing TLOU: Remastered back when it first came out and thinking "wow this is amazing, this looks like a real PS4 game" at the time (I never played it on PS3), but going back to it now, after playing games like UC4 and HZD, it is clearly a generation apart. Huge difference.Last edited by The JareBear; 03-11-2017, 02:06 PM."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Yeah I agree before early last year there were not really a lot of good excusive games and a lot of games looked not much better then ps3 games. Starting with Ratchet and clank I think games started getting better. Ratchet and clank was good and at the end of last year we got TLG it was good and now we got Horizon have not played a lot been playing Zelda but from what I have played it is a good game and we also have Spider-Man coming out at some point. So with Ratchet and clank, TLG, Horizon and Spider-Man the games are starting to pick up. I also think 2017 looks to just have a lot of good games compared to the last few years. Even games that are multiplatform this year are looking like better games to play compared to some of those in the past. Like Yooka-layee, sonic mania for an example.Comment

RE7 praises is making me rethink about getting it and playing it in VR. Yakuza 0, Nioh, and NieR are raking in top scores. Horizon, a potential GOTY sits in my backup log and looks and plays amazing. The Show is 2 weeks away is always a must buy for baseball fans. Now, I'm hearing and reading early reviews of Persona 5 getting 10's which comes out next month!!??!! Then in May, we get the 2 most anticipated VR games!?!

Now though holy smokes I'm Blown Away by the looks of today's games and I don't even have a PS4 Pro or a 4K TV. I go back and play some PS3 games and it's Jaggy Central man lol. I played the evil within a couple weeks ago on the 360 and the difference is very apparent. The PS4 is clearly in its prime now and I don't even want to think about a PS5 until at the very least 2020

2016 was an overall better year than 2014 and 2015 and compared more to 2014 as opposed to 2015 in regards to their not being a true standout game like 2015's The Witcher III. Uncharted 4 was excellent but also disappointing for me in several ways. FC Primal was awesome as was The Division. FPS were all an 8/10 or better from Doom to COD: IW to BF1 to TF2. Mafia III had the year's best story, characters, locale, atmosphere, immersion and soundtrack by far and arguably the best since The Witcher III in each of those categories.
On the Xbox One side, Rise of the Tomb Raider was awesome for the year that it was a timed exclusive but I do believe that Microsoft continues to waste millions of dollars doing that as they did it with Dead Rising 4 and neither game sold well on their platform. Microsoft should end paying for timed exclusives. Either go full exclusive or at least Xbox One/PC since for them, it would make sense.
Ryse was solid and better than I expected. Gears of War 4 was excellent. Ori is probably this generation's best 2D platformer. ReCore was just boring, bland and generic. Expected more and my personal expectations are always in the middle. LOL. Forza Horizon 3 though was awesome to where I'll be buying it digitally along with the season pass and im not a racing/driving fan at all but man, is the game damn good. Quantum Break was also disappointing.
Scalebound being cancelled was huge for a lot of people but the main character turned me off completely and between this and Nier: Automata, it was obvious after their E3 showing last year that this was going to be Platinum's TMNT/Korra as opposed to being their Bayonetta/Transformers.
As for 4K and HDR, to me HDR is the game changer and once meta data gets implemented into HDR, forget about it. It will be the closest (if it isn't already) leap since SD to HD for gaming.
My only problem with it all is that Sony and Microsoft moved too quickly on it all and they should have saved it for PS5/Xbox 4. Mainly because we still don't get games at a consistent 1080P/30FPS so adding all this other visual stuff which just puts more added pressure on the consoles CPU was to me, rushing it all. Both should have waited in my opinion.
With that said, after playing Forza Horizon 3 last September and now Horizon: Zero Dawn, I love HDR and it would be tough to go back to playing games without it but at the same time, I still think that it was all rushed in regards to gaming consoles.
Can't comment on Zelda in general but as for it being the best ever launch title, I'll disagree simply because there will never ever be a game that can match Super Mario 64 simply because at the time, it was revolutionary and is STILL the 3D platformer in which every game in this genre is compared to. And granted, some may have past it due to the game being over 20 years old but none of them have had the impact that Super Mario 64 did back in 1996. Zelda may have some great stuff in it and while it may be revolutionary for the Zelda franchise itself, from what I have read and seen, it's nowhere near being revolutionary especially when you compare it to Super Mario 64. I would also put the original Halo on the original Xbox as being more revolutionary at the time compared to Zelda now. And I don't give two craps about Halo. LOL.
My personal best and favorite launch title was SMW on Super Nintendo. Not even close for me. As for PS4/Xbox One at launch, not really a surprise. Every generation has the exact same problem. Outside of a SMW, Halo, SM64 and yes, Zelda, having an awesome standout launch title is few and far between. I do think SNES had the best overall launch lineup considering the time. SMW, Pilotwings, SimCity, Gradius III and F-Zero. First year, SNES is still the best. Zelda: LTTP, Contra III, TMNT IV, FFII, SFII, Super Castlevania IV and Super Ghouls n Ghosts, etc. made it simply amazing at the time.
Also makes me sad though too. To look back then and see what Capcom, Konami and Squaresoft were compared to now is just so disappointing at least for me anyway.
Sorry for the long post.Comment

None of this games were on Sony consoles, so I should probably end it there as I probably couldn't be more off topic right now, hah.
Regarding PS4 and the rest of this "cycle," I am curious to see what we get in a couple years with devs who had the Pro at their disposal from the beginning. I saw the Horizon dev say that they didn't get all the could out of he Pro because it came along mid-development.
Regardless, those games you mentioned in 2014, and to a lesser extent in 15, were good for me but just not great (just talking about me personally, and my experiences). 16 is when things really started to pop for me. Playing Titanfall 2 on my Pro was the first time in a long time I felt like I was playing on my PC.
Edit: It could be that back in 2014, and to a lesser extent in 2015, my PC was pretty solid, it is barely mid range now but then it was a pretty high quality machine. As time has gone on I have shifted to my PS4 more as I just spend more money on consoles than I do on my PC nowadays.
What I am really looking forward to is the day when consoles have legit CPUs and RAM for better draw distances/less pop in, that kind of stuff. Raw image quality wise, I am fine with games looking like HZD for then next 3 years if we can get improvements in the behind the scenes settings.Last edited by The JareBear; 03-11-2017, 10:54 PM."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Thanks for the input. I loved Mafia 2 (beat it twice) and from the first trailer I was hooked on playing Mafia 3. Then seeing that they would add three extra stories with the DLC I was like wow period so to say then I'm looking forward to playing it is an understatement.
That being said I also love D the First Watch Dogs but was disappointed that the second one doesn't have the same serious undertone as the first. still, I believe I will still have a good time with it.

I'm still waiting for something from Microsoft to get an XB1. There just isn't anything I want at the moment that they have. And if there is, like you said, you can play it on your PC. Hopefully, E3 changes that. But man, Sony exclusives are killing it lately.
RE7 praises is making me rethink about getting it and playing it in VR. Yakuza 0, Nioh, and NieR are raking in top scores. Horizon, a potential GOTY sits in my backup log and looks and plays amazing. Microsoft definitely needs to up their first party catalog but at the same time, multi-platform alone, I have a backlog so more exclusives just means a bigger backlog for me. Basically, if Microsoft gives me a bunch of exclusives a year that I want to play, great but if it's only one exclusive a year, im perfectly fine with that too.
Add in Switch exclusives and too many games, not enough time.Comment

Halo is #2 on my all time launch game list, for me it was 1 until Zelda. Honestly I forgot about Mario 64. Good point.

On a related side note, I think that Sony and Nintendo talk should be permitted and allowed in the other's respective discussion simply because if it wasn't for Nintendo dumping Sony and their SNES CD-Rom attachment which Sony turned into PlayStation, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
And when you think about it, Nintendo doing that also led to Xbox because if it wasn't for the success of PlayStation, Microsoft never had any intentions on getting into the hardware side of gaming.Comment

Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion
You're welcome. And yeah, im waiting on the expansions as well. I LOVE Ubisoft as everyone here im sure knows but Watch Dogs 2 didn't grab me since it's reveal. Out of WD2, For Honor and GRW, it's actually third and will be played third. LOL. Trust me, it's rare that I don't buy and play a Ubisoft game day one.
You're dying for Spider-Man aren't you? LOL. Be patient though as it's a ways off. 2017 has definitely started the best since jeez, hell, I don't even know. LOL. Probably at least ten years or so since the early part of a year has been this good. Best part is that two months in, 2017 has already been stacked and will become even more stacked as the year progresses.
Agree with the Sony exclusives killing it even though a few I have no interest in and Uncharted 4 was excellent but also a disappointment for me. I have Xbox One for the exclusives. I have completed Ryse, Gears 4 and Quantum Break. Gears 4 is by far the best of the three. Ori is great but I barely played it as it's in my backlog. Forza Horizon 3 is Xbox One's best exclusive in my opinion. Next up for me will be State of Decay 2.

lol yes I am dying for a good Spider-Man game again. I love batman and Spider-Man and it is time for Spider-Man to get a game that is like Arkham knight greatness. Because we have not seen more yet though I am thinking it is going to be a 2018 game. Yeah we are only in march and have already gotten Horizon great ps4 game and my all time favorite game in BOTW from Nintendo and there are still a lot of other games I am really looking forward to. Yooka-Layee I am really looking forward to as I like platformers a lot and 3d ones have kind of died and with it being made by some of the people who made the only DK games it should be great. Also I have never played Crash but I am going to get the remaster when it comes out have always heard a lot of good things about them. 2017 is looking to be one of the best years for video games I can remember. The new Mario game looks great to.Comment

Sony has marketing deals with Activision for Destiny 2, the new COD and with Rockstar for RDR2 so they would be stupid to release and exclusive in the middle of all that. GT Sport is the only exclusive that can get away with it simply because of it's genre.
Yooka-Laylee should be good. I never played Crash either but im 50/50 towards it. Still haven't played Ratchet and Clank and once I do, I may simply have had my fill of plat formers.
2017 is already one of the best years in gaming and it should only get better. However, I wouldn't be surprised at all if RDR2 and Mario get delayed to 2018.Comment

Nice. Yeah, Batman is good and Insomniac can learn a lot from it but I hope the melee/combat system is different and well, better. I'm expecting Spider Man in spring/summer 2018. I can see a Detroit: Become Human late this summer or fall but the main game will be GT Sport. Don't see Days Gone, God of War IV, etc. until 2018.

While I am sure that Spider-Man and its combat will be different then batman's. I was just saying its time for Spider-Man to get the love and attention to detail that Batman got with the Arkham games. Also it being made by the people behind Ratchet and clank games I love and not being a rushed movie tie in gives me a lot of home for it to be good. I am hoping they will show more at E3 at least. But yeah if it was this year I think we would know more about it by now have not really had any thing on it since E3 2016.
When it comes to GOW I was thinking 2018 but I have heard some rumors that it could maybe be late 2017. I am wondering what if any thing big sony may have for holidays. If they could have Spider-Man or GOW around holiday that would be big. The funny thing about Platformers and Ratchet and clank is up in till like a year or 2 ago I had no idea that people considered it a platformer. I don't I think it is more action/adventure game. I wouldn't be surprised if Mario gets pushed back to 2018 either but they do need it to come out. If it gets pushed back then switch would really have nothing in its first year in less they show off some good games at E3 that come out this year or something. Right now all switch has is Zelda and that can also be played on wiiu so I am not sure how much that really sales the system and then you have nothing at all in till Splatoon 2 and nothing big in till Mario.Comment
