Bumping because I had a question to all the tech heads:

I know buying a gaming PC from Best Buy is dicey, but I was curious about what you all thought about this PC as a mid-level gaming machine. In particular, I wonder how it would run Watch Dogs and NBA 2k14. Seems like people have been able to run Skyrim and Diablo 3 pretty well.

It'll definitely get the job done, and even if you were to build it yourself there wouldnt be much difference in price. It will probably run watch dogs and 2k14 on medium/high settings. One thing you may wanna do is upgrade the ram to 16 gb though. Does it come with a monitor or is it just the tower?

There is no reason to upgrade to 16 gb of ram. You could take two away and likely not notice the difference. Medium settings would be more likely. So for mid-level gaming I think it would be good.

Everyone should check out this thread, it has a lot of good building and hardware advice.

No monitor. Just the tower...with HDMI output I was planning on hooking up to my 40 inch Sony Bravia. Would that degrade the video quality?

There are plenty of reasons to have 16GB of ram, its relatively cheap now days, its something he wont have to upgrade for a while and assuming he's gonna be using the computer for more than just gaming, it will definitely make multi-tasking a lot easier. For straight up gaming 8 gigs is fine, sure, but having 16 will certainly help more than it will hurt.

No i hook mine up to my tv all the time and there is no noticeable difference. Also to clarify what said about the ram, you dont NEED 16 gigs if your just using your rig for gaming and regular browsing then your good with 8. But its a pretty cheap upgrade that you want have to worry about down the road. Definitely not a neccessity though

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I might pull the trigger, and potentially upgrade to 16GB of RAM in the near future. Should have another memory slot for easy install I assume...

Besides updating the drivers, what do you all recommend to get the most out of the gaming, and to keep it virus free? I currently use a combination of Spybot, Malware Bytes, and MS Security Essentials and havent experienced any issues on my current PC. Also, any ideas on best controllers for PC?

If he is going to be rendering HD video and working in Photoshop simultaneously it would help. If that's the case then he should go for it. If not the $60+ is better off going towards something else. I just assumed he was trying to keep in relatively cheap.

When I hook my PC up the my TV I have to change some scaling settings. I'm not sure if it's my monitor or TV that is off a little. So if you hook it up and there is stuff cut off or the picture doesn't fill the screen don't worry it's an easy fix.

You look like you are good to go for virus protection.

I am always be fan of building from scratch because I think it's fun. It might be worth trying to piece each part out individually and see if there is savings that make it worth it.

I recently decided to hold off on next-gen consoles for now. Might pick one up in the Spring at the earliest now. Still some stuff I'm excited for on the current-gen and I need to get this PC done soon. Can't wait to finish it up.

The 360 controller. If you have a wired one Windows detects it right away. With a wireless one you need to PC adapter, which Microsoft stopped selling for some reason. I've read that the 3rd party ones like this work fine though.

2K14 should be fine assuming it's a 360 port instead of XBO/PS4 port but it might catch on fire if you try Watchdogs. You can also do better for the price. The videocard by itself would cost $75 which is peanuts compared the current high end stuff.

As long as 2k (NBA) and EA (FIFA) support the PC I will always be primarily a PC gamer. Only reason to own a next gen console will be for The Show and possibly the MGS series if it doesn't come to PC.

That's discouraging. Was about to pull the trigger . But this is what has always worried me about going the PC route. The high point of entry (cost wise) limits the type of rig I can get. So I always feel like I won't be able to keep up with the latest and greatest games. But down the road I know I will save money with a gaming PC. Games are cheaper and no equivalent of XBL or PSN to pay for...
