Re: Disk consoles are not necessary anymore

I think that a reasonable argument could be made that Playstation Now is a sneak preview of a future console generation. Might not be the next, or the one after that, but I could see it happening. It's not a 'jetsons! flying cars for all!' type of prediction but rather something we could see in just a couple cycles.

Not only would you be discless, but you could be console-less too. Controller, some compatible host device outputting to your TV (old console, phone, smart TV itself), done... with the alternative being digital downloads when absolutely necessary.

Ouya and Onlive since they were brought up actually both share the same problem, lack of content and accessibility. they both had to replace something/add to the pile of things attached to my TV and neither provided sufficient motivation to do so for a number of reasons. Gaikai is basically Onlive, the difference will be the backing behind it, the pairing with complementary Sony services and products and availability across many devices.

Next gen I think you could see people playing games exclusively on Playstation Now the same way people are going all digital today. It won't be for everyone, but some will do it because it will be conducive to their playstyle.

Plus with a physical copy one can always play it offline although a mod may have to happen to do so, whereas when the data is not in your hands a company can 100% dictate your access to some or all of it AND they can even choose to charge you for access to it if they so choose.

Possession is nine tenths of the law still applies here and progress, as you say, in this direction anyways, is NOT inevitable at all, so long as there is competition. One only has to look at the about face Microsoft had on the Xbox One DRM and digital access to see that my friend.

No one is talking about DRM. DRM is not the issue.

And I'm not sure why you're talking about competition when both Sony and MS are taking steps towards digital only with the PS Now service by Sony and the rumored digital only XBone console that may come out.

Production costs eat into both of their bottom lines including distribution to physical stores.

      It's inevitable.

Re: Disk consoles are not necessary anymore

DRM isn't the issue per se but it demonstrates the power of the consumer was my point. If they want to bring out a diskless console and the public rises up like they did with the Xbox One then it won't happen. I don't know why that's so difficult for you to understand. Technology advances when people accept it, companies cannot force technology on people typically.

Nothing is inevitable if consumers don't purchase it. Just ask the makers of HD-DVD. So long as there is competition anyways. People will always like the option of digital only but it won't become the norm as the only way of distribution in our lifetimes, especially with the defeat of Net neutrality and the impending death of unlimited! uncapped high speed internet. That fact alone will put digital distribution even further back as an "inevitable technology" in itself.

I probably wouldn't stop gaming, though, it would certainly be an end to an era. I don't mind going all digital, but I would like to be able to store my games locally somehow and without any DRM restrictions.

              About to hijack my thread.

Does anyone know why using an external hard drive to play games allows me to have better performance? Is it because that is the only thing processing?

                    • USB 3.0 interface
                    • 5400 RPM
                    • Plug and play
                    • This Toshiba USB 3.0 external hard drive holds up to 666,000 photos, 285,000 songs or 526 hours of HD video
                    • Compatible with Microsoft Windows 8, 7, XP or Vista
                    • Includes preloaded backup software and USB 3.0 cable

Ultimately if console had the option to go the route I pointed out in my initial post Xbox one and PS4 could play every PC game with settings maxed out.

Re: Disk consoles are not necessary anymore

All this talk about transfer to the next console. My steam account has been on I think three different PCs and has had no problems on each of them.

Digital is the way of the future and if Steam is any proof the cost is substantially cheaper than console games.

The main problem with PC and why they are not as widely used as consoles is because people (general public) are stupid and because PCs are rarely advertised anymore while consoles are.

The steam box may change this. I can't help but feel like if people really knew how, I was going to say easy but let's say not difficult PC gaming really is. Sure you might have to setup some settings the first time you load the game up to get the correct resolution and things but so what. It's not really that hard. Plus Nvidia now has software to do it for you on some games.

PC has so many advantages over console and I see a lot of complains about console that are not issues on PC. Like I said however the problem is the people don't see PCs as a gaming platform but as something to do work on. If the steam box can change that mentality then maybe we could see the unification of gamers rather than the separation.

Biggest issue with me for Steam Box it is missing EA and who knows if they will ever put Origin on there. That alone would make me just get a Xbox/PS4 or build a PC.

Once EA swallows their pride and puts Origin on there then the value is there.

Yeah, not a huge fan of Origin. It'll be a big decision, especially with a new Mass Effect on its way.

What? You actually like EA's lineup that much? I didn't think it was possible.

Those arguing against discless consoles must not have a smartphone.

Either that, or they are side loading apk's on Android.

This is the future. It's not a question of if, but when.
