Re: Disk consoles are not necessary anymore
I think that a reasonable argument could be made that Playstation Now is a sneak preview of a future console generation. Might not be the next, or the one after that, but I could see it happening. It's not a 'jetsons! flying cars for all!' type of prediction but rather something we could see in just a couple cycles.
Not only would you be discless, but you could be console-less too. Controller, some compatible host device outputting to your TV (old console, phone, smart TV itself), done... with the alternative being digital downloads when absolutely necessary.
Ouya and Onlive since they were brought up actually both share the same problem, lack of content and accessibility. they both had to replace something/add to the pile of things attached to my TV and neither provided sufficient motivation to do so for a number of reasons. Gaikai is basically Onlive, the difference will be the backing behind it, the pairing with complementary Sony services and products and availability across many devices.
Next gen I think you could see people playing games exclusively on Playstation Now the same way people are going all digital today. It won't be for everyone, but some will do it because it will be conducive to their playstyle.
