    Wasn't there a problem with PS4s at launch that caused you not to be able to connect wired. The fix was to take something (knife or something) and bend a metal piece in the ethernet slot back up into the default place. That should fix your issue.

        When you connected directly to the modem did you try resetting the modem first? I'm betting that the ip it assigned was already given to the mac address associated with your pc...just a thought.
