Re: Pros and Cons of going to an all-digital game library

Daniel77733 - I really cannot argue with any of your comments in your long post because they are the same points I made in every thread about digital a year or so ago. As for the laziness, I prefer to call it convenience, lol..

And in regards to losing a disc, well I'm 45 years old and owned thousands of games and never lost one until Skyrim.

Not sure how old you are but you probably will too if you continue to game. I am extremely well organized but the thing just disappeared. Maybe someone stole it but I seriously doubt it since I rarely have anyone over.

Anyways, I wanted to clarify, I will buy games digitally if I plan play them a lot, like Madden or Diablo. If it's a game like The Last of Us where, once I beat it, I will never play again, I buy physical copy. The only flaw there is the sports games being annual..

If you felt the same as what I posted a year ago, what really made you change your mind and go partially digital?Originally posted by ODoggDaniel77733 - I really cannot argue with any of your comments in your long post because they are the same points I made in every thread about digital a year or so ago. I'm 36 and have bought, collected, traded and sold hundreds of games over the years and never lost one. When I was a teenager, I did break some games but that's a different story. You probably misplaced it somewhere or accidently threw it away.

Either way, losing one game out of thousands shouldn't all of a sudden make any gamer want to go digital. There has to be other reasons. As far as it being convenient, it is but in a very minimal way.

Yeah, I can understand wanting to keep playing a game over and over. I did that with Splinter Cell Conviction but difference was that I spent $20 on it digitally, not $60 and it was later on when it was on sale. I have spent (wasted???) so much money on games in past generations that I have become more strict and limit every disc based game to $20 and every digital game (PSN and Indies) to $10. I figure that if I average spending $20 for each game, I can basically play three games for the price of one.

Even if I want to play a game a second time like I want to do with The Witcher III next year after both expansions get released, I'll just buy it again because it would still cost me less than buying digitally. The main reason is that I have played more games already this generation that I wouldn't rate higher than a 7/10 and while that's because I stopped overrating games, to spend more than $20 just isn't a good idea or investment. Granted, I could play less games but unless the game is really bad, broken and unplayable or im simply not into it, I figure that with GCU, im not losing anything and get to at the very least try out more games. I wouldn't be able to do that digitally because of the difference in cost.

In general, whether it's here, Neogaf or GameFaqs, I have never seen anyone post good valid reasons as to why they went digital. It's always convenience, laziness or just a follower type thing since others do the same and it's done with movies and music. The only difference is that gaming is a far more expensive form of entertainment and has season passes, DLC, etc. that cost even more money.

I simply look at it as - would I rather play one game for $60 or three games for $60? I will always choose the three games over the one game because the one game would be included in the three but the two games I would miss out on could be games that I shouldn't have missed out on.

With GCU, no gamer can lose, can save money and play more games and if the gamer wants to keep playing the same game over and over, they could just keep the game or at the very least wait until there's a sale for the game digitally. If GCU didn't exist then I would be a lot more selective in my gaming purchases but I would still buy physical.

In the end, I don't want gaming to go all digital because my main form of entertainment and hobby goes down the drain and also because I truly believe that gamers who stick with it if/when that happens are going to get screwed over badly but won't be able to do anything about it because they have only one other option - quit gaming.

 Either way, HAPPY GAMING!!! Comment

Not going to lie, it's pretty much pure laziness on my part. lol

I play my four major sports games almost for the full cycle, and by the time the new one comes out, the trade-in value isn't that much. I played Madden 15 all the way up until a few days ago and I only got $5 for it. That $5 is what I can save in taxes at the store.

To each his own though. I see the pros and cons from both sides.Comment

No, but I also don't have to rely on them supporting a console. I can play it.

 See: SNES, Genesis, Nintendo.

They can't take those games away from you, nor can they cut off access to downloading them.badComment

Re: Pros and Cons of going to an all-digital game library

I live in a somewhat remote area where the closest BB is 30 mins away, and the closest GS is 15 mins away. Digital allows me to save in gas and purchase games without leaving my house. I've only bought 3 discs in the last year and two have been when I bought both consoles.

My advice is do what is more suitable for your situation.GT:jb12780

Re: Pros and Cons of going to an all-digital game library

I wish I could find some of my old posts because you sound exactly like me a year ago.

Well maybe I am a bit different because I own two systems but for me it started when the wife kept moving discs downstairs and my man cave was upstairs. I had been buying games that were in the store, the independent ones, digitally and I liked the fact I could just start the game and didn't have to load the disc. So when I bought Diablo it was digitally because I knew I'd play it a long time and it'd make life more convenient.

I was thinking about what you said last night after i went to bed and yes part of it is laziness but it's also part convenience. Yes I know there is a blurred line but if I've had a busy day at work and just want to get into a game I'd rather just fire it up from the console and not have to go get the disc and change it out.

I was also thinking about remote controls. Is using a remote control lazy? Probably, but yet virtually everyone does use remote controls for their tvs now. Hell I know I've been standing by the actual tv before and still looking for the remote. A remote is, in my opinion, similar to digital games, it's just an added convenience that once you really start using you don't want to give up.Last edited by ODogg; 08-19-2015, 10:35 AM.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Dude, Best Buy is giving $30 for Madden 15....that is actually the reason I've been rethinking the going all-digital like I have. I mean $5 is why I quit giving a crap about having a physical copy...that and the fact my nephew doesn't have a system for me to give my old games to.Not going to lie, it's pretty much pure laziness on my part. lol

But $30 for an old football game I'll never play again? It got me thinking if maybe I need to consider buying physical media again...at least in some cases such as Madden, which Best Buy offered the same deal last year again as well..Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Pros and Cons of going to an all-digital game library

While I 100% share your sentiment I do think that the 100% always connected internet world will also render physical copies obsolete if the connection isn't there and/or if it's still supported.

The days of buying a cartridge or disc and just playing it without any internet connection are numbered. I do hate that and I realize the companies will hold all the cards but it's just a reality unfortunately.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Pros and Cons of going to an all-digital game library

True, sales do come slower but...Digital sales come way slower than in stores, FYI.

I'm very similar to you, I'll maybe play an hour at night if i have time, usually weekends i'll get some time in, but not tons. I've started limiting myself to fewer games and trying to actually beat them (almost beat Far Cry 4 now!). Fallout 4 will own me for a while, I think that'll be my primary game this winter.

I've got DAI, Far Cry 4, and am still about halfway through the Mass Effect trilogy on PS3 with Last of Us Remastered and Shadow of Mordor still in the plastic waiting to be opened and played (again, in TLoU's case) plus I want to get Batman, GTA V, and The Witcher. Add that to NBA, Madden, The Show, FIFA, and WWE games...and that's just my gaming hobby. I've got 2 kids and am an avid long-distance runner, too. There's no way I'll be opening both TLoU and Mordor before the end of the year. Stupid "new system enthusiasm" got me good with those...plus I had no idea how long DAI really was at the time.

In other words, the sales may come way slower but right now my purchases are going to be way slower, too.PSN: JWGoNDComment

Re: Pros and Cons of going to an all-digital game library

Slightly off topic, but if you have a Best Buy, they're giving $20 in credit for M15 plus a $10 off coupon toward M16.Not going to lie, it's pretty much pure laziness on my part. lol

Back on topic, I do trade most of my older games in. You typically don't get a whole lot, but every $5-$15 helps.

Now, if GCU applied to digital games, I'd be more tempted to go digital.

Edit: Never mind, ODogg already pointed that out.Comment

Re: Pros and Cons of going to an all-digital game library

Now, I gotcha. You have a wife and probably kids so yeah, now it becomes more clear. You come home from work, have stuff to do at home and if you're in bed, you don't want to have to get up. I get it now. As long as the money difference isn't a factor then yeah, I understand you're point of view.I wish I could find some of my old posts because you sound exactly like me a year ago.

I can guarantee that in a year from now, I will still sound the same as I do now. LOL. Having GCU and being able to save a good amount of money, still be able to play and complete games, trade them in for the next game and being able to try more games than I normally would is just simply too good to pass up for me.

Using the remote for the TV is way different simply because it's not costing you $60 every time you change the channel. Similar concept but still a huge difference. Whatever works best for you and everyone else in general is what truly matters.

I just don't want to see gaming consoles go all digital because I know that it's going to kill off my main hobby and form of entertainment and screw over those who stay with digital.Comment

For my vita though, I've gone all digital. I've lost two games while traveling so I stopped buying those and download games whenever I go to my gf brothers house.
