Re: Nintendo Switch Announced, Scheduled to Release March 2017

Sony wouldn't disagree, people don't remember the PS4 shortages at launch? This stuff is par for the course. I always assumed it was an optics thing, you don't want to have a full wall display of boxes that makes it look like no one wants your product, so ship 70% and watch the demand create itself between eBay and people waiting. If nothing else, it gives something to talk about.

Interested in the event tonight, I don't know what they'd have to do to make me buy it but I hope they do whatever that is. I'd love something that I can take with me.

That actually makes a lot of sense, now that I think about it more. And I also bet the stores don't want hundreds of these boxes just taking up space in the storage rooms. The first store that comes to my mind is Gamestop. All the Gamestops near me are either in a mall or shopping center. You don't see a building that is just for a Gamestop. And these buildings aren't that big. So something like a 150 boxes would probably take up half their storage area. And they definitely don't want that.

But it was very easy to pre-order a PS4 for a while. Amazon and Best Buy had pre-orders up for a while. Not only that, but pre-order availability would pop up every so often. If Nintendo even makes that difficult, I'm going to lose interest.

Couldn't they just not order 150? I don't understand why Nintendo should ridiculously limit stock because a store may not have enough room. Buy for demand and space and see how it goes.

Every hot tech item has limited stock. Nintendo just takes it to another level with every single product they sell. Amiibos, GameCube controller adapters for Smash Bros, Mini NES, probably the Switch. It just gets old.

There were shortages only after everyone that wanted it had already pre-ordered the system. Those going to stores to not find a PS4 had only themselves or their budget to blame.

Nintendo appears to be taking the limited pre-order route with every release. Forget going to the store. Will any of us here be able to give Nintendo money ahead of time?

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I think it's even worse to have shortages when people should be able to go in the store and see the product as opposed to during a pre-order period. It pushes people to feel obligated to make uninformed purchases. I don't like what Nintendo does with their stuff and they definitely take the process to a 10, but everyone else is around a 7 so it doesn't bother me as much.

Maybe they'll actually make enough of them this time.

First Switch game I've seen live, Lego Undercover for $59.

              https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B01MS6KPOH

Reportedly Gamestops will have 25-40 preorders, starting tomorrow morning.

Not a great idea. Doesn't start until fall so it gives them some time to back out.

It wouldn't be too bad if they let you download a virtual console game each month that you subscribe, but I doubt that will happen.
