Re: New PlayStation 5 Details Revealed, Arrives Next Holiday Season

The two SKU approach with one weaker and one stronger is said to be a definite for Microsoft as the Dealer Gaming podcast I listen to confirmed it via their sources and even were "greenlit" in regards to them being allowed to talk about it. I believe that it was Fonz who believes that it will be $400 and $600 respectively while others believe $300 and $500.

I have never been a fan of the two SKU approach at launch simply because it makes the decision for consumers harder and if they go cheaper, they may end up regretting it. For Scarlett, they wouldn't be surprised if the weaker cheaper console is a 1080P/60FPS console with some extra stuff like HDR, etc.

Me personally, when I hear that and see that PS4 is 1080P for $300, Xbox One Slim is $300 and I believe upscales to 4K, Pro is 4K CBR and X has some games in Native 4K, I don't see why anyone wouldn't just spend the $200 extra and get the main console because if you're buying a next gen console, you should want it to be next gen? Otherwise, what's the point in buying it? Plus, for Scarlett, since you can play the exclusives on Game Pass and save at least $50 (for a month) for each individual game, four games would technically make up the $200 difference.

As for PlayStation 5, there's been rumors of a two SKU approach as well. I'm old school. I simply believe that generations should just consist of one console, one price, one choice. Very easy, simple, straightforward, no compromises, no regrets, no waffling back and forth, it's either a yes or no as opposed to which one should I buy?

Price wise, im expecting $500 for both as anything past that would be putting them close to being dead on arrival. There's a reason why Sony and Microsoft don't give out individual numbers for Pro and X - because neither are impressive whatsoever as majority go with the cheaper option.

But next gen, Ryzen CPU, better GPU, more RAM, HDR, Ray Tracing and so much more, I just hope it's one console. Just give me all that goodness for $500. Combined with Sony/Microsoft getting everything in bulk from manufacturers, their loss would be minimal and easily made up by PS+/Gold subscriptions as around half the user install base are subscribed to either or both.

I know majority wouldn't mind two options but I simply see it as doing more harm than good and to be perfectly honest, defeats the purpose to going "next gen". But that's just me.

Regarding BC, if it actually happens, how will it work with game saves? Let's say you have a roster save from the prevoius gen console, will you be able to copy it with a USB stick to the new gen console and load it up?
      My Specs:

      ZX Spectrum
      CPU: Z80 @ 3.5 MHz
      GPU: Monochrome display
      RAM: 48 KB
      OS: Sinclair BASIC

        A good question.

Also want to know/see how the performance boost of PS5 effects previous generation games. We've seen the snippets of Spiderman. But it will be interesting seeing some of these games with heavy load times, seemingly load up in an instance.
I can see there being less remasterss, at least for PS4. I can see most PS4 games being automatically upscaled when played on PS5.

Great question but way too early/soon to know.

I'm expecting the performance boosts to be via an update and is most likely up to the publisher that owns the respective IP. The PS5 console itself will probably boost PS4 games but to really take advantage of it, I would expect that an update for the game would be needed.

Will come down to if the respective publishers want to actually put the time, money and effort into the update to truly update the game. Look at Bloodborne. Sony published it and owns the IP yet never received a PS4 Pro update despite it being the 5th best selling PS4 exclusive of the generation.

Just have to wait and see how that all plays out.

If not......I will finish every games in my backlog then move on to the PS5. So I may be picking it up in 2021 or launch. It really depends on the BC feature for me. I have so many great games I want to still play on my PS4 Pro.
The caveat is, for me and, I assume for you, is when you feel a need to play the new sports game on next gen. That probably is not year one.

I have a backlog, too. But I will stick with this gen until something forces me into next gen, and that is usually sports games.

If the solution is anything other than 'before starting the game it downloads your cloud save', then they're doing it wrong.

Cloud saves are fine but shouldn't be the only way especially if it's connected to PS+. Why should I pay money to upload/download my saved progress? USB option should definitely be available if they all allow it to transfer over.

IMO, PS+ should only apply to multiplayer features, which I believe it does. Regardless, you shouldnt need PS+ to download cloud saves because that would sorta mean you need PS+ to download patches.

Unless they changed it, it's still connected to PS+ and says that you get 10GB of cloud storage. This is several months old and could have been changed since then but I don't have PS+ and to be honest, using a USB is easier and faster for me anyway.

I do agree that it should be free though and not stuck behind a paywall if that's the case.

Turning a console on, having it get your save when you start the game is...harder and slower than turning on the old console, finding the saves, copying, turning the console off, then going to the new one, go into settings, find the save on usb, copy to the hard drive? I must be doing something wrong then...

But either way PS+ does it wrong. Steam, Origin, Xbox all do it for free. Xbox has auto sync. No cap on storage. Don't need to be a paid member. PS+ not only do you have to pay, but you have to manually download and upload cloud saves on your non primary console which is odd. And the space...towards the beginning of PS4 I ran out of space and had to go in and manually manage the ones I wanted to keep. Really turned me off, especially considering I had to pay to use it.

They need to change it to be more like those listed above, as it is they are more aligned with Switch which probably isn't a good indication.

I keep game saves on a USB flash drive once im done with the game in case I ever want to play future DLC/expansions for it. Once I re-install the game and download the update, I copy the save from the flash drive to the console while still keeping the original intact.

I always play games off-line so for me, it's simply easier and quicker to copy my save to/from the flash drive than it would be to connect online.

I also have a separate USB flash drive for PS4 Save Wizard. Hehehe.

In general though, I agree with you 100%.

I am so ready for ps5. I kind of want this year to end has its been a boring year for sony with them not really doing any of the bigger shows and not getting any update on GOT and over all not seeing many new game announced. At the same time I dont want the year to end with next year being a election year has they drive me crazy has its all you hear about lol. But yeah hopefully we get a show with ps5 in feb like we did with ps4 back in 2013. One thing I wonder about ps5 is with a game like driveclub that has had all its dlc pulled from the store is there a way to transfer its dlc over to ps5?

If it is a way to cut down price without having to sacrificing console power/performance, then I'm for it. I felt with the Pro dropping at $400 they had to do some cutbacks to get it to the price. But if having a smaller SSD can keep price down while still have a powerful console, I'm okay with having to buy bigger removable SSD cartridges. I was originally thinking they might go at least 2 TB drive. But if making it a 1 TB can cut the cost down, then I think that could be the route they take. Me personally, I would ok with just a 1 TB SSD. I usually delete game data after I'm finished with a game anyway and I usually focus on one game at a time, so storage was never really a problem for me. Unless the proposed cartridges offers better performance, then I probably wouldn't bother any way. But I'm sure many people would buy a 2 or 3 TB cartridges. And that(plus PS Plus) would be a way to make up for cutting cost of PS5.

But if that was the case, that would mean they are trying to get it down $400 or $500. $400 has been the sweet number for them. But I could see $500 as the most logical price. If they do the removable SSD cartridge route and it is $500, then they know they couldn't sale under $600 without taking a big loss. Times are different than the PS3 launch days, but $600 is still a price that most probably wouldn't be okay with. $500 is the max I would want to pay. $400 would be great, but only if that doesn't mean less powerful console. I just don't want a need for a PS5 Pro model

My concern would be the potential extremes (which IMO is unlikely - but we watched it happen with Vita):

To ship a $400 SKU, only include a 500gb SSD (or smaller, which seems so unfathomable it's not worth hypothesizing), as game sizes continue to balloon that would only hold a handful of larger games.

Then, shipping a proprietary expansion product - so it doesn't realize any economies of scale of their PC counterparts, they're inflated in price 50-100% (like the Vita memory cards). 2TB SSDs are currently ~$199. 3-4TB are typically twice that in most circumstances. So expanding the storage could be cost-prohibitive.

Ideally external connectors would be sufficient and supported, rather than having to rely on the proprietary expansion cartridges.

Execute it right and they're rolling in it, ship items that are close to the price of similar products and it could be a good plan to keep the base SKU pricing down. Do this wrong, and they bring the nightmare of the Vita to their primary console product, which is the last anyone who's a fan of gaming wants to see.

Given the option, I'd prefer their SSD carts be expanded themselves. Support opening them up and replacing them with commodity SSD drives. Let us put 8TB SSDs in there in a few years, etc without the need to buy a blessed self-contained unit with their logo, etc.
