    Re: Steam Deck

    Man, this thing is awesome.

I don’t think Valve gets enough credit for the ecosystem and platform they’ve built up over the years. It puts Sony and Microsoft’s efforts to shame, and when you compare it to the handheld king in Nintendo, they’re easily 1, if not 2, decades ahead.

The steam deck has integrated seamlessly into my existing PC experience, and somehow this damn 7 and 1/2 inch OLED screen is the best panel in my house now, lol.

I primarily bought it for indies and non triple A experiences, and it has been perfect for that so far. There’s just something about games like that where so many of them are more comfortable to play on a handheld. But it’s powerful enough, where you can come and go from a higher end PC without feeling the drag of the pretty low end hardware you get from the switch.

I’ve started out by playing Sifu and I’ve also finally gotten around to a proper play through of Stardew Valley. I have at least half a dozen indie type games lined up behind these too… Cuphead, Celeste, Dead Cells, Dredge, Hollow Knight, etc.

Speaking of the easier to run indies, I also love how you can tinker with the power. On top of the improved battery in the OLED model, you can pretty easily customize TDP and clock speed per game. So a game like Stardew for example, I can just about minimize the power draw and stretch the battery to nearly 10 hours.

Anyways, just a really great package overall. An easy recommend from me for anyone who may be on the fence.

Can you install other launchers pretty easily like Epic and Xbox?

I do have enough steam games to justify the purchase but I’m considering the competition with the flexibility of multiple launchers since i have plenty of xbox content

Epic and GOG are easy and straightforward to set up, but I wanna say Xbox requires a separate partition with a Windows install? I’m not entirely sure..

I would guess it’s probably pretty easy to at least get whatever the Xbox streaming service is called through a browser or something.

Yeah, Xbox stuff is a little more involved iirc, but everything else is largely covered by things like this:

Just a matter of how much you want to mess with Linux, and as technical as I am I've never done much of that and need character-by-character guides when I want to do anything of that magnitude with mine.

That being said, I did end up getting emulation station all setup and Xbox game streaming.

            Steam Deck

After watching a ton of videos, while I’m impressed with the Go and Allys performance; the battery life, OLED screen and the seemless experience with steam, I’m ordering the SD Oled.

I figure 80% of my pc games are on steam anyway and I’ll save my AAA gaming to my gaming laptop.

I gotta say though, it’s very competitive between the 3 so that’s great. All of them have pros and cons and this was probably one of the hardest consumer decisions I’ve had in awhile.

I'm debating a handheld, I travel a decent bit for work/vacation. Movies, books work, but I wouldn't mind being able to use my Game Pass games on the road.

What's the best solution for mostly offline gaming - with Game Pass Ultimate? I know i can make a Steam Deck do it, but it's not native. I'd rather have a quick, easy UI without paying for games separately.

Suggestions? Wait for a MS/XBOX handheld?

Probably the Legion Go, then Asus Rog Ally extreme. They are both windows.

The Legion Go you can take off the controllers like a Switch and it can be used as a windows tablet and it has a bigger screen. The Go is huge though but its the most powerful out of the windows machines and can run AAA games. 144hz screen and 1080p resolution. Battery life is terrible though on the windows machines and you will probably played plugged in or with a battery backup.

The Deck i would recommend if you have a Steam library or plan to buy on Steam. From what I researched, its a bit difficult to run xbox gamepass on steam os and you would have to setup a partition and install windows.

Steam deck oled by far has the best battery life.

Anybody using RPCS3 on the SD notice a difference recently? NHL 2k10 has worked fine since I got my SD, but within the last couple weeks, it crashes within a minute of booting up. Seems like a new build of RPCS3 broke it? My other games seem to still run fine. Can anyone else confirm? I am not sure if it is even possible that my ROM suddenly corrupted, but I am not a computer guy. . .

I haven't used my Steam Deck in so long. I just fired it up and had 70 updates. I'm gonna see if my RCPS3 is still running well. I may reset it and start over. I'll report back when I get everything finished.

I gotta say, the Steam Deck (OLED) is one of my favorite things I've purchased in a long time and its up there with one of my favorite consoles ever.

Besides getting through my Steam backlog, its been great using it a PS Portal and its a Retro gaming beast. Emulation has been a been a breeze on it.

It hasn't been perfect, I wasn't able to update the OS and had to reinstall the OS but that was pretty easy.

Hey, did you ever get a chance to see if NHL2k10 works for you on the Steam Deck? I still can’t get it to work on mine (crashes within a minute of booting up). Really odd - other games with RPCS3 seem to work fine.

It crashes on my Steam Deck also. I'm not sure why, I tested it on my PC and my Legion Go and it ran fine. I'll also see if it runs on my Ally just to rule it out.

My Steam Deck is running the Linux version of RCPS3 also.

OK, I got it working on my Steam Deck. I hadn't used my Deck in forever. My issue was, the TDP limit was toggled on in the performance settings. I disable that and manually set the GPU clock to 1600 Mhz and the game ran smooth.

So, I have this game running on all my devices. Let me know if you run into any issues.

Nope, didn't work for me. I got into the TDP limit toggle (thanks to Google - as I mentioned, I am far from tech-savvy!). It was already toggled off. I checked the GPU clock and it is already set to 1600. I went back and ran NHL 2k10 again, and it crashed inside a minute (second menu). Tried a couple more times with the same result. Really odd since other games on RPCS3 on the Steam Deck are still working.

Are you using Emudeck or stand alone emulator? If you can right click on the NHL file in the games list and click manage game patches and apply it and see if this works.
