Well obviously the length ruined it some, seeing an ape beat his chest for 10 minutes every 20 minutes tends to drag down the flick a lil.

      Re: King Kong

      Just got back from it.

Okay, whoever said that the first hour in New York was boring and pointless, well... first of all, I hardly call 27 minutes an hour. Secondly, it was not pointless. It shows off each character, their personalities, and their desires. Every movies needs that... otherwise there's really no character development (if that makes sense).

This movie was terrific! The first half seemed a lot quicker than the last half, though. For some reason, I sort of did not enjoy the endless action sequences, although they were terrific. Visually, it wasn't the best... but how in the hell they pulled all of that off? Well, that's beyond me.

My little sister, her friend, and I actually shed some tears at the end. I don't know why... I guess I'm easy like that. Kong actually became a very sweet character to me.

I will probably not see it again. Once is enough. However, that one time, it was pretty good. I did not mind it being 3 hours at all!

        Re: King Kong

I saw Kong a second time yesterday with my brother since he wanted to see it. I'd have to say that I enjoyed it more the 2nd time since I knew what to expect. Also I got to the theather 5 minutes into the movie so I didn't have to sit through the previews and everything. I think one of the biggest problems I had last time was the length. When you get to a 3 hour movie 30 minutes early, that makes for a long afternoon. This time it was much better. All the time before Kong takes the girl went faster, I didn't find the tribe scene as freaky, and I caught a few more things in the movie I missed the first time. Originally I would have scored the movie a C+, but now I would give it a solid B. It is doubtful that I watch this movie again for another 5 years or so unless a friend wants to see it, but overall I enjoyed it much more the second time. I understand the importance of character development, but the movie needs to go somewhere with it. It did a pretty good job following up on all the early character building except with regards to the black shipmate and the young guy Jimmy. As a earlier poster noted, the movie introduced a back story between these two, but their story ended abruptly leaving their characters pretty pointless to the overall movie. All the dialog between those two could easily have been left on the cutting room floor and it wouldn't have made a difference in the movie.

Exactly. Along with the staring and just watching kong move over and over again tends to wear thin.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

i didn't say the background was pointless, just that it could have been condensed and made shorter.

              Re: King Kong

              From a 3 hour movie? I don't think so.

I think what could have been condensed were "battle" scenes outside of what Kong had to face. When Carl, Jack, etc. are fighting those spiders and other creatures, it was a little bit of an overkill. Some of it is okay... but they went way too long. As a matter of fact, all fighting scenes went too long.

I didn't mind it all, though. I wasn't bored during any part of the movie, except maybe some parts on the ship.

The only time I really realized how long it was occurred about midway through when I really had to take a leak. I held it until it was over. I have the bladder of a champ!

                  Re: King Kong

I finally got around to seeing this film.

I thought it was a solid flick but too long. Almost no movie should be 3hrs long.

The special effects were amazing and the action sequences were top notch.

Naomi Watts did a terrific job with her character. I thought her performance was worthy of a oscar nomination.

                      Re: King Kong

Its depends, this movie should not have been 3 hours. But a movie that has the content for it can be 3 hours and it works perfectly (LOTR, The Godfather 1 and 2, etc.)

As long as the film has the content to fill the time, it can be 3-3 1/2 hours long and it will still work for most people. The problem with King Kong is that it does not have the content to be a 3 hour movie, it is dragged out to be 3 hours.

The only time I felt like the movie was a dragging was the very beginning while we were following Naomi Watts around the city. No matter how long the movie was, whether it was 30 minutes or 3 hours, nothing was going to keep that part from dragging.

yeah there certainly were a few parts I could do without... but overall I still found the movie quite enjoyable.
