Movie ticket sales dive in 2005

    Stunning news......

What they lose in movie ticket sales, they probably make up in DVD sales. It's only a matter of time before movies get released in the theaters and on DVD at the same time, with the DVD having no special features and only being able to be viewed once.

Being able to be viewed only once?

And then what? It self destructs?

In some cases, DVD content is required to expire after a certain period of time. One example of this is an entertainment title sold at a low price point. Another example is a DVD that includes a time-sensitive special offer. New technologies now allow for the development of a “disposable” DVD. Once removed from its packaging, the disc plays only for a specified period of time and then becomes unreadable by the DVD player.

This isn't surprising. Overall, the headlining movies sucked.

I remember when DVD players first came out there was a company...like Divx or something....that sold DVD's that were made to be only viewed once. They were relatively cheap I remember...but the company didn't last very long.

                edit: Linkage http://news.com.com/2100-1040-227194.html

"Divx is a limited-use version of DVD that allows viewers access to movies for 48 hours after the initial viewing period. After that, a customer has to buy the disc for viewing again. The technology, developed and marketed by Circuit City, has been criticized for muddying an already complicated DVD field, which was marked by an early, contentious standards battle. "

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

The idea of self expiring DVDs is already being carried out in some places in the US. It's a nice idea but if it's mass produced on the scale AF is talking about then there's going to be a backlash.

I'd rather have a movie company stop putting movies in theatres and go all out with special feature DVDs instead.

could it be all these great TV series from past and near past are being bought and watched rather than spending that same price for one viewing. instead getting a whole seasons worth of your favorite show.

i know ive gone to less movies because I have all these tv series to watch at home. its like one long great movie for the same cost.

I propose movies be released in the theaters and on DVD at the same time to give consumers an option. The DVD would just be the movie with subtitle options. I would release DVD's with special features a few months down the road like what they do know.

While movie theater business is declining, there will always be demand for movie theaters.

I love my big screen tv and surround sound, but I would still rather watch X3 in the theaters than in my home.

The film industry has to adjust like the music industry. What they can't do is stop every pirate. With technology there is always a way to "steal" movies and music. Some people will refuse to pay a penny if they know they can get it for free. That's never going to change.

Another option decades down the road is selling movies like they sell music at iTunes.

I think they need to lower ticket prices and allow independent films to be on the spotlight, or make better movies, because most of these movies have the same structure. You can relate it to mainstream music, same song structures with the catches and hooks, and whatever. If you like it, fine, but it seems that since tickets are down, this might be part of the reason why.

I would go to more movies if there were 2 or 3 screens in every theatre which played independent films.

I would go to more movies if someone decided to be original.
