wtf? HD-DVD's price is a stretch, blu ray is just flat out ridiculous. I don't think I'm going to get either one. I'll get the HD-DVD drive for the 360 and then just use the PS3 for blu ray, it'll save me a lot of money in the end.

I stick by my statement that neither will make it, and Blu Ray will only be around because of the PS3. The discs are more, Joe Consumer will be confused on the 3 formats (DVD, HDDVD, Blu Ray). If anything, HD DVD has the better name to not confuse the customer, as he'll understand what it means. Blu Ray, God only knows.

Betamax (better quality than VHS, that did great), Mini Disc (that was better than CD), Super Audio (is that even around!?). All these were supposed to be better than what we had or came out the same time in Beta's case.. None survived. All pushed by Sony.

I think it would be or Sony might as well scrap it. Nobody will pay over 500 for a video game system for their kids.

Totally agree, but you think if they sell a PS3 for $400, anyone would even consider ever paying $1800 for the stand alone player that does LESS than the PS3 version of Blu Ray does? Only guess now, is they release the PS3 for $400, but it will NOT play Blu Ray DVD's...

Sony is a smart company. They realize they are in for a battle here with HD-DVD, and its very important for them to come out with the win. Therefore, by charging $1800, and knowing that HD-DVD will be much cheaper than that, Sony is saying that to make this technology, thats how much it costs them per player. There is no way they would be looking to make a profit at this point of the battle, so $1800 tells me they cant make it any cheaper than that. Now to go and take a $1400 hit PER PS3 would be ecnomical suicide for Sony.

I hope you're kidding or you recently bought some Sony stocks because for Sony to charge $1800.00 is nothing but serious price gouging. I can guarantee you the machines only cost them about 20% of what they intend to charge for retail. This isn't a revolutionary peice of machinery, the only thing revolutionary about it is the gall that Sony has in inflating the price because it's the newest thing and getting caught with thier hands in the cookie jar because HD-DVD players only want a 500% profit rather than the 1000% profit that Sony was trying to milk it for.

Just like when VHS and DVD players first came out and were priced over a $1000 within 2 years these HiDef players will be retailing for $200. It's simply the hope that companies have enough idiots (there always is) who will pay the initial price so they can inflate thier profit margins.

Sony will cut the price in half after a month when they realize there aren't enough morons taking the bait and like I said wait 2 years and you'll be paying a tenth of that price. It's been happening with computers for years and now with TV's unfortunalty. I can't wait for what ridiculous price Sony comes up with for the Blueray DVD's themselves.

Sony's PS3 is supposed to stand for a while. It represents the future of gaming, and they're starting it now. The PS3 could stay for 15 years before they consider the next console; the 360 couldn't if Microsoft wanted to compete.

That said... I don't know what the price is or what it will be, but why not start revolutionizing now?

you realize that 15 years ago, we were playing NES. PS3 can not last 15 years.

it will have a life cycle of 4-6 years, just like ever other console

Sony has TO MUCH at stake to price gouge at this point. The winner of the HD/Blu-ray battle will be the company who gets the most units into the most homes, and charging $1400 more than your direct competition just to "make a quick buck" is a ridiculous notion.

That's exactly why I say this. The PS3 is so damn powerful (and is already taking advantage of technology that isn't out to the general public), that I don't see why it can't go at least 10 years.
