Technophiles and media outlets.
You'd be surprised at how many people there are that would blow that kind of money on a risky proposition. I'm sure the networks will have a few of those machines in case it becomes the preferred medium for storage of media.
This announcement tho puts me out of the running for buying any of this. I'll just wait til the war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is over.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: HD-DVD player to retail at $799 and $499... Blu Ray player to retail at $1800
Neither side will end up winning this war. The prices of these things will plummet to normal DVD player price within a year after they realized no one will fork that much money, when most people haven't even settled into their DVD players yet.
Blu-Ray will only drive Sony deeper into the hole that they're digging themselves into. What a bunch of idiots they've got at Sony. They've got no domination in the market anymore.Comment

If I get my hands on $1800, best believe I'll spend it on a HDTV before I spend it on another DVD player, I still haven't made a complete switch to the standard DVD's yet. I still have crates and storage bins full of VHS tapes."It's A Business Doing Pleasure With You." - LeGrandComment

Re: HD-DVD player to retail at $799 and $499... Blu Ray player to retail at $1800
Originally posted by ExtremeGamerI stick by my statement that neither will make it, and Blu Ray will only be around because of the PS3. The discs are more, Joe Consumer will be confused on the 3 formats (DVD, HDDVD, Blu Ray). If anything, HD DVD has the better name to not confuse the customer, as he'll understand what it means. Blu Ray, God only knows.
Betamax (better quality than VHS, that did great), Mini Disc (that was better than CD), Super Audio (is that even around!?). All these were supposed to be better than what we had or came out the same time in Beta's case.. None survived. All pushed by Sony.Redskins Fan. HD DVD and Blu Ray are not going to suceed only because most people don't understand what either are, and they are competing against each other. Blu Ray DVD's are expected to cost $30 a piece for a basic DVD. No clue how much once info is put on there, but if I have Wedding Crashers for 14.99 or 29.99, I think I'll be buying the 14.99.Comment
