This is my first time ever watching 24 and even though I don't know any of the characters, the first segment was really good.

Was the president a major character the first 4 season?

For Sully/Asain who don't have the "connections" to Michelle/Palmer they were both integral parts in the first four season. Palmer was in the last few episodes last year after the president was killed and the AP sucked. Palmer was the president the first 3 seasons. Michelle was one of jacks only friends in CTU.

Yes, he was the main plot for the first 2 seasons. Was in a lot season 3 and near the end of 4.

Next to Jack (Kiefer Sutherland), he was probably the biggest character.

Yep. There's way too much to explain, but Palmer and Jack have a very close relationship. Jack was Palmer's right hand man.
