Re: The Greatest Drummer of All Time

You guys got me thinking YouTube. This is a pretty amazing clip. They coined it as a battle, but it clearly was in concert:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QbMlHAFZXx0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QbMlHAFZXx0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If you want a true drum battle though, this one proves who the master drummer is of all time:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/erE8WTngaAY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/erE8WTngaAY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And one more from the master!

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/w8wIXXBOqxE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/w8wIXXBOqxE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

(You didn't think I meant the other guy, did ya?)

And still one of my favorites, from one of my favorite comedians:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1EhaA9TO4RM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1EhaA9TO4RM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Not sure if he's the best, but just to throw a name into the fray that hasn't been said yet (anyone else that came to my mind has already been introduced into the thread by another poster):

      Travis Barker

Also, whoever the drummer of Dream Theater is; not familiar with the band but I saw a clip of him in the Rock Band 2 thread.

Travis definitely isn't the most technically sound, but he is without a doubt one of my favorite to watch. He puts so much energy into each of his performances that it is just fun to watch.

I'd probably put him third on my list of personal favorites (behind Moon and Copeland), but he's a little further down in the "GOAT" discussion.

Neil Pert and Keith Moon for sure. Carl Palmer from ELP is also an amazing drummer. My favorite unknown drummer is Bill Bruford of King Crimson. But I am all about Phil Collins playing the drums while Peter Gabriel was still in Genesis.

The song is Suppers Ready, its a Gabriel song but he had left the band before this was recorded. At 1:40 is the start of an awesome drum duo between Phil Collins and Bill Bruford, which is being played in an very different 9/8 time signature.

It does not get any better!

I am a guitarist but really all a drummer is there for is to keep time.
You can name all the quote on quote greats but really it all comes down to this

This mofo will be my drummer when I am famous...

                Travis Barker is a douchebag.

Sean Kinney from Alice in Chains would get my vote.

I'm not sure what best drummer means because I'm dumbfounded how many people are saying Keith Moon who is perhaps one of the worst technical drummers in rock history. If you mean magnetic and flamboyant personalities then Moon gets my vote but to even mention Moon in the same company as Neil Peart is an insult to Peart. Moon was terrible and he himself even admitted that one time back in the early 70's.

John Dolmayan....he is a really really good drummer gets my vote for the GOAT. I think his new stuff on the Scars on Broadway CD is really awesome it really shows he can work well beyond the power metal scene.

Yeah he is definitely one of the most theatric drummers but is more flash than substance. He banged the drums loudly, had flamboyant stunts like fish under his drums, and showed off with lengthy drum solos. Having a larger than life personality (very unusual for a drummer as until that point in history they played second wheel to the rest of the band) in addition to the fact that he died at such a young age causes many people to overrate him.

Re: The Greatest Drummer of All Time

What's the criteria? What makes someone the best drummer of all time?

                        Meter?
                        Power?
                        Speed?
The ability to amaze with drum rolls?
                        Drum Solos?
The band that is around them?

Being that it's music and not sports, wouldn't it be more logical to ask who is you favorite drummer of all time?

                          Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater

Paul Craddick - Enchant (I know virtually no one has heard of him or the band, but he's amazing)

My criteria is the contribution to the band and more importantly the contribution to the quality of the music since I listen to music for the music and not to satiate a drummers inflated ego by listening to an out of place and overly long solo, drums banged excessively loud just to show off, etc. I feel that way about guitarists as well. I still can't listen to the solo in the song "Heartbreaker" by Led Zepplin without laughing my *** off. Just so out of place and random, the entire song just drops out for Page to show off.

Danny Carey is probably my favorite in terms of overall ability -- he's got all those polyrhythms and crazy time signatures, tabla skills, insane technical chops, and raw power... total package.

Art Blakey is my favorite jazz drummer.

Dave Lombardo gets honorable mention for sheer ferocity/speed/skill as well as versatility (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, etc.). Surprised no metalheads rushed in here to throw his name out.
