    5 Mbps Down/ 2 Mbps Up is $40 a month.
    15 Mbps Down/ 2 Mbps Up is $50 a month.

Since I was a Verizon DSL customer, I got the 15 Mbps Down/ 2 Mbps Up for $40.

The Verizon FIOS is very very limited in area. As for DSL vs. Cable, that's a another debate. I've had DSL for over 5 years and its never gone out ever. I've had friends who have had lots of problems with their cable connection. It really depends on the company you get it with.

Installation is usually free if you do it yourself. SOmetimes you can get 'professional' installation free if you're a new customer.

I've never had any problems with DSL. I was about to switch to Comcast Cable since my contract was up with SBC. However, I have family who has had comcast and they hated it. They got a lot of outages and it took a couple days to get a technician out. They recently went with SBC DSL and love it. SBC offered me an upgrade for the same price as I was paying and I took advantage of it.

DSL is slow slow slow. I would recommend Cable. It might be more expensive, but its worth it in the long run.

Re: uprgading from dial up ? Dsl or Cable

I had Verizon DSL for 6 years, and had an outage once for about 30 minutes in that time. My landlord, who lived in the same house, had Roadrunner which was going down at least twice a week. It all depends on the situation. DSL is great in an area where many people have cable, but cable is better if you're far away from the central office of the phone company. DSL also normally carries a $150-$200 ETF for the first year. Some companies, like Bell South, renew your contract, so the ETF is constantly in effect. Cable almost never charges an ETF, because there's no cost for the company to hook you up. The provisioning for DSL can also take up to three weeks to occur.

If you're worried about installation fees, call the company. Tell them you want the service but won't pay the installation fees. Many times, the salesperson will waive the installation fees for you.

If you're on dial-up, you can't go wrong with either DSL or cable. If you're not technically savvy, you might want to check out Earthlink. The Total Access software package is amazing.

hehe - i actually went the other way.. had cable, loved the speed but the cost after a while turned me off.. in my "new pad", I have DSL.. havent had an issue for the year or so i have had it.. the other thing about the two is with xbox live - trying to host game on DSL or cable is different (with cable i was able to host for a lot of people, while DSL i was limited)... as far as speed, cable is faster, but for me, since i cleaned up my computer, my DSL based computer is running pretty fast as well...

                      That's just an ignorant statement.

I had DSL in NY, and it was pretty good, no complaints... When I moved south, my immediate area didn't have DSL, so were left with cable as our only option... Got Roadrunner with Time Warner, bundled with our phone and cable... pretty good deal.... It all depends on the deal you get, I'd say.

I am thinking about getting cable with my local cable company. Do you think I should or go with comcast.

and what exactly are you trying to do with all that speed. I think that is also a question to consider. Cable is more expensive, do you need all that speed?
