John Lennon was not rapping on that song...one of my favourite beatles songs, but he was not rapping. However, the beatles were one of the orginal groups to chop and skew their records as well as create amazing samples....of their own work. Paul McCartney's solo on Taxman played in reverse on Tomorrow Never Knows is just sick!

Pseudo-rapping if you will, its not rap by todays definition but it sounds like a precursor to rap, but did rap even exist in 1960's?, dont flame me, I really dont know.

this song here is nice "Wind Parade" by Donald Byrd. Its a cool jazz cut.
It has been sampled a couple of times but off the top of my head here are a couple of songs:

              2Pac "Definition of a Thug *****"
Black Moon "Buck Em Down" and "Buck Em Down Remix"
              Organized Konfusion "Stray Bullets"
              Fav teams:
MLB: Tigers NFL: Lions NCAA: Michigan/WVU

I meant my question about rap existing in the 1960s, sorry, the way I typed that is a bit unclear as to what Im referring to.

Nope, however many people point to ska emcees in the 1970s as the beginnings of rap. I believe they started the use of turntable scratching.

                      Steven Tyler.

Now, hear me out on this one, boys, before you start your flamethrowers. Before Tyler collaborated with RunDMC on its cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," rap and hip-hop weren't mainstream for white America.

But that wall came crumbling down once Tyler hooked up with RunDMC, just like the wall crumbled in the video for the tune! Mainstream white America and mainstream radio and MTV woke up to rap and hip-hop due to the popularity of that song and video arguably more than anything else, and the two genres have exploded since then.

Don't get me wrong: Guys like James Brown have had a much more profound musical effect on the genres. But as far as mass acceptance, I think Tyler working with RunDMC was HUGE.

                      Take care,

The first name that popped into my head when I saw the title of the thread was Bob Dylan. He influenced a lot of groups/artists to actually think about what was being said in their music. Also, if you listen to some of his songs he evokes a cadence that is more in line with rapping than singing.

Well then you might as well mention Woody Guthrie and the rest of the folk music scene of the late 1950s and thru the '60s. Dylan was hardly original in his material. His originality came from the WAY he got his message across.

No offense, but I really think some of you are confusing most influential non-rap artist with first influential non-rap artist. There is a big difference in the titles.

Dylan is credited with creating an entire genre of music, how is he not original?!
