Rap was not a genre of music but the term rapping has been around forever. Rap is an acronym for Rhythm and Poetry and anytime a singer chose to speak over music instead of sing they were considered rapping. This applies mostly to folk musicians and some pre-rock pop music.

Re: Who is the most influential non-rap artist to influence rap?
Dylan was the first artist to perform what is now known as Folk-Rock. Before Dylan, folk music was strictly one man singing a song (usually ballad) over an acoustic guitar with the occassional harmonica. The folk people hated Dylan when he started incorporating other melodies into his music and added drums, electrified instruments, an organ, etc. For awhile, Dylan was booed off stage in many places because he was no longer doing Folk music and the purists hated him for it. He bridged the genres of folk music and rock and paved the way for a lot of musicians. His contributions to rock and roll and music in general are imeasureable. His album Highway 61 Revisited is considered by most critics to be among the top 5 best Rock albums, not Folk, ever created.
And this is coming from someone who isn't a fan of Bob Dylan.Comment

Thanks for the info there. I've always thought of Dylan as being the natural progression of folk music. Oh well...Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
