    Re: Donnie Darko

ODogg - I'm not going to quote your post point for point because, frankly, it's not a debate. My statements are my opinions of the film, the intentions of the film maker, etc. I fully except that fact that people of all ages are going to disagree with all of these opinion.

However, the one point I will dispute is the status of the movies I listed as "Cult Classics" as well as your implication that (a) they don't make anytype of larger statement and (b) a movie needs to to be a "Cult Classic". "Evil Dead" arguably one of the top "Cult Classics" of all time (save "Rocky Horror") was some Michigan State classmates who wanted to make a horror film.

The only other thing that I will say is that I STRONGLY believe that 99% of the kids who see "Donnie Darko" claim to "get it" and "love it" because their friends do. We (I'm 33) went through the same thing in our generation with "Dune". Do you remember when they actually gave out reference cards on the way to the theater?

Trust me when I say I tried to enjoy the movie. I've seen it more than a time or two. I've seen both cuts. I've seen "the book" on it.

    Just not there for me.

I watched that movie at the suggestion of a friend... and I remember sitting there when it was over going, "is there a point to that?"

I didn't like or dislike it... didn't think it was good or bad... it just didn't matter to me.

Watch it again malrak. That's about the reaction I had the first time I watched it. I was like "What the **** did I just watch?" Then my buddy got the Director's Cut and we watched it(second time for both of us). Now it's like my favorite movie of all-time.

            Bump.

I just watched this again (Director's Cut) and I'm still awed.

Yeah it's a trippy movie, I like watching it and just pondering the questions it asks.

The closing scene with the "Mad World" cover is fantastic.

I'm pretty sure the "Mad World" cover makes any scene fantastic... you can't beat that song if you're looking for something that's chilling, yet kind of touching as well.

I go back and fourth over this film. Saw it a couple years ago first impression was that it was all over the place. Decided I needed to watch it again about a week later and fell in love with it.

Now looking back, I believe I might have just been caught up in the hype of trying to be a part of Darko bandwagon. I honestly can't decide if the film should be considered one of my favorites.

Bottom line: this film, along with Requiem for a Dream are two of the most talked about and debated works on whether or not they should actually be considered classics.

Films are all relative so all of the debating is quite pointless.

It's a totally different movie, much longer and discusses much more of what is going on, in some ways some may not like it as much because it explains more but I love both versions to be honest.

I'll agree its a great movie, but I don't think I'll ever put it in my "favorites of all-time" lists; however, there are some scenes which I consider favorites, such as the "sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion" scene. I also think the cast did a fantastic job.
