The professor was talkin out of his @ss, the BIOS were rebooted and the person got away. Dumb @ss professor thought he could scare people into snitchin. A Berkeley professor was outsmarted by his students oh the irony.

Perhaps because the professor was lying through his teeth. Excuse me for defending(?) the criminal. I didnt realize I was defending anyone. Perhaps you could stop defending a professor who has the responsibilty to protect "sensitive" information on his laptop. Maybe he could excercise a bit more care and caution with an item that contains said information.

Now please tell me if that was your private information i.e.; social security#, address, etc... Would you not consider him a ******* for losing that information? I'm sure you would love your personal info just floatin around. Try looking at the big picture.

That laptop would have been at the bottom of a river before the prof even gave that speech. If the thief bragged about it to his friends, he's finished. If he kept everything to himself, he's fine. They'll never catch him.

Seems like if the prof had that sensitive of info on his computer, it should be nearly impossible to get to. I think he's just bluffing, but either way the student should be at minimum expelled for the crime.

i'd consider him unlucky to have untrustworthy COLLEGE students.

i just dont see the point of calling him a dumb^%$. what if your sister was walking home from school and a dog came from behind her and bite and ripped her pant legs on her jeans. do you blame her because she wasnt aware of her surroundings or the dog for for doing something out of this world that we, on a normal everyday basis, dont really think about. We'd be locked up in our houses 24 hours a day if we were that conscious and cautious of every imaginable negative scenario.

Since when it is bad practice to lie or make false promises in the hopes of getting stolen property or information back? The police do it all the time, and considering they are trying to gain information from criminals, I don't see how it's an issue.

I might consider him a ******* (I also might not), but I would be more upset with the person that stole the computer than the person that owned it. If my "guardian" had a laptop with every single bit of personal information about myslef, and was mugged at gunpoint, and handed over the laptop, I would not be pissed at my guardian. I'd be pissed at the criminal that stole it.

Being a ******* isn't illegal in America. Being a criminal is.

I don't see how this relates to anything or how it makes much sense at all, but I guess you don't see importance of being responsible for not only your own property but thousands of other peoples personal information(their property).

I guess ,as you said, sometimes a laptop gets stolen sometimes a dog bites you in the ***. Se la vie!

I guess I missed the part about him being held up at gunpoint,...Oh wait that didn't happened. What did happen though is that he left a rather expensive and important piece of property unmonitored for an extended period of time and it was stolen by a college student looking to make some money off selling a stolen laptop.

The people whose info was on that computer should thank their lucky stars that the criminal was a property thief and not an identity thief.

I don't think you're grasping the concept of responsibilty and accountability this man was to have with this type of information. This was a situaition that could have been avoided. It's not as if he was in a dark alley and some one snuck up on him. HE put himself in this precarious position.

When in possesion of "sensitive" information one should treat and excercise caution with said information. I don't see what is so hard to grasp. This conversation has quickly become laughable.

Okay, they are both *******es. Excuse me for not treating the criminal as I treated the criminally stupid professor. I'm sorry for singling out a professor at Berkely and not reprimanding the criminal.
