Because of music, some kids think that its suddenly OK to curse, and they think it's not a big deal. Of course, bad parenting is also a big reason why cursing is so popular, but music is as responsible as anything else.
How would music tell a kid that it's ok to curse? If the parent don't do anything about the kids cursing then they are going to think it's ok, not because they hear a song with the curse words bleeped out.

Same here. I'll curse often around friends and co-workers, but I have too much respect for my parents and in-laws to curse in front of them...or at them.

So being more likely to drop an occasional f-bomb due to repeated listening to profane music is akin to a violent videogame leading someone to commit a violent crime? Pretty terrible analogy, there. One's a choice and one's an illegal act.

Most behavioral scientists will agree that you are what you eat, what you watch, what you listen to, etc....and that by surrounding yourself with profanity you become accustomed to it and therefore more likely to use it yourself. But there's a huge difference between being influenced into dropping a curse word or two and being influenced to commit a violent crime.

They are both ridiculous examples of entertainment influencing someone to do anything. I don't see how cursing and killing aren't choices but whatever.

How is there such a difference between cursing and committing a crime when both are supposedly(according to some people) caused by being around a form of entertainment that "encourages" the behavior? If someone was going to curse they were going to do it regardless of whether they listen to music, that's just an excuse to get them off the hook. It's pretty amazing that people continually blame entertainment but they never want to say that the parents encourage the behavior by not telling their kids to not do it.

I curse (nothing too explicit) in front of my parents and brothers....but never in front of the little kids or much of the extended family.

As far as other parents go, no WAY.

Re: So when did it become cool to curse.....

I think it's fair to say that music has an influence in how we speak. It isn't the only influence, but it is a part of it.

Throughout elementary/middle/high school, I rarely to never swore at all, period. And when I did, it was normally just me mumbling it to myself when something would go wrong. But over the last year I've been working with someone who swears alot when they're not happy, and since we started working together I noticed my swearing getting worse. I've been trying to control it lately, because I really don't like it, but it's kinda tough. We(or at least some people) adapt to what we hear.

That said, I still know when to not swear. I have never sworn in front of my family, teachers, professors, customers, or any other situation that I shouldn't. Normally it's only when I'm by myself, or with friends that I know won't mind.

I dont curse around my parents or anyone else's parents.. I think its disrespectful.

But more than that.. who came up wit the whole concept of "curse" words? Theyre just words like any other word. Its not the word thats offensive its the meaning behind it. But theres bad meanings behind other words/phrases that arent curses so I just never got the whole thing.

I didn't swear infront of my parents (well, freely at least) until I was over 21. I do it when I'm angry or when I'm watching sports - which is pretty damn frequently.

I'll swear around my friend's parents if they swear alot, but if they don't then I'll keep it clean. I'm respectful.

                          an interesting read

BTW we talked about this is English at the beginning of the year, and all I remember from it is something about these being old Celtic words and the settlement in England and something along those lines

I was wrong to say that music has no influence as it is where most of the slang comes from but it's not as big an influence as people try to make it out to be.
