As opposed to the NHL, where the only big stars from this season who aren't in the playoffs are Crosby, Ovechkin and Kovalchuk?

The NBA has its share of stars who won't be in the postseason. Iverson, KG, etc. In fact, the No. 2 scorer (Iverson), No. 2 rebounder (Howard), No. 2 assist man (Davis), No. 2 blocker (Kirilenko) and top two guys in steals (Wallace, Knight) from this season probably won't be in the playoffs this year.

That's bullsh*t. OK, Ovechkin and Crosby aren't in. And since they're the only guys that you see on ESPN and read about on ESPN.com, you figure that there are no good rookies in the NHL playoffs. Well, there is. Phaneuf, Lundqvist, Carter, Richards, Getzlaf, Ryan Miller, etc., etc.

Please. Those are once-in-a-generation players. Are Magic, Bird, Kareem and Jordan in the NBA Playoffs this year? Of the names you listed above, only Lebron and Kobe are even near their category now. And as for players who are past their prime, does the name Shaq ring a bell?

To avoid predictability too... I truly think the NBA needs to move back to a Best-of-5 1st Round.

Re: NBA Playoffs vs. NHL Playoffs

I've had a little trouble getting back into the NHL this year. I even subscribed to NHL Center Ice, and was watching hockey every night early on, but my interest started to fade after that. I don't really have an explanation for why either.

Conversely, I have not followed the NBA at all this season up until a week or so ago, when I watched the Sixers collapse and miss the playoffs. Despite the fall, I am hyped for the NBA playoffs, but don't really have a team to root for.

In hockey, the Flyers and Oilers both made the playoffs, so I will likely watch more hockey, but this weekend it will primarily be about the NFL draft for me. The NFL is the most exciting draft for me, and it's just great fun to watch young guys get taken so that you can remember their selection years from now when they become stars, or scrubs.

EDIT: The draft isn't this weekend, ha ha. I am getting ahead of myself.

I heard on M&M today that some NBA playoff series' will have THREE days off between games.....WTF? Series that start this weekend won't end until mid May? Becasue of TV. What a joke. When are Finals? July 4th?

I don't care about either playoffs. Any sport that consistently has sub .500 teams in post season is just wrong.

David Stern was asked why there are such long breaks today in his ESPN Insider chat and he said it's because of tv and some of the clubs share the arena with an NHL team.

Yeah right. It's all TV. Teams have been sharing arena's with NFL teams forever. They never had that many off days between games. Especially the first round. I mean the first round...come on.

California, Utah and Michigan say NBA playoffs
Every other state says the NFL Draft by a considerable amount

The arena thing's nonsense. It's an NBA bylaw that they receive preference over the NHL in regards to scheduling when two teams play in the same building. Even at the ACC in Toronto. Now, it's entirely possible that the NHL asked for a few scheduling favours and the NBA granted them, but the NBA has final say in these matters. It's TV all the way.

NBA bylaw? That's the first time I've ever had of it.

You're telling me next year if the Kings and Lakers both made the playoffs, the Lakers would have first dibs on playoff dates? I doubt it considering the owner of the Kings owns the Staples Center.

I have no reason to believe Stern isn't telling the truth.

Someone should paste this in the "Is baseball still America's pastime?" thread.

I've never really understood the appeal of the NFL draft (why would anyone care beyond the first 5-10 picks?), but maybe it's because I'm Canadian. Anyway, enjoy!

Here's my viewing schedule for the next two days:

Friday, 4pm, Oilers at Red Wings, CBC
Friday, 5pm, Sharks at Predators, TSN
Friday, 7pm, Mighty Ducks at Flames, CBC
Saturday, noon, Rangers at Devils, TSN
Saturday, noon, Avalanche at Stars, NBC
Saturday, 4pm, Canadiens at Hurricanes, CBC
Saturday, 4pm, Flyers at Sabres, TSN

As far as NBA 1st round series go, I'm interested in Nuggets/Clippers and Suns/Lakers, and that's about it.

I can't seem to find any proof through Google, so perhaps I'm wrong. I certainly seem to recall this issue being mentioned when Vancouver and Toronto got NBA franchises a decade or so ago, but I am getting old, so maybe my mind's going...
