Add another vote for City of God.

Also, there's a good ghost story movie called "The Devil's Backbone" that I thought was excellent.

Yeah, dubbing can be rediculous at times... very cheesy, and yes, the quality of the movie gets brought to a low point because of it.

Do British movies count as "foreign" films?!?! Because there are a bunch of great British movies!

              Thanks,

Good point, but I don't really count them. They easily find U.S. distribution compared to other "foreign" films.

                I say:

ANY Kurosawa (Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Throne of Blood, Hidden Fortress, etc.)

Rules of the Game- Jean Renoir

M-Fritz Lang(My favorite film of all time)

                The 400 Blows-Francois Truffaut

                Wild Strawberries-Ingmar Bergman

My Life as a Dog- Lasse Hallstrom

                The Killer, Hard Bolied-John Woo

                Toyko Story- Yasujiro Ozu

                Blowup- Michelangelo Antonioni

I LOVE all of these(it was hard to narrow it down), and I love foreign film. I think its a crime that some people write off subtitled films. A damn good film is a damn good film, regardless of what language it's in. Just as The Godfather is great to French, Japanese, or Swedish audiences, the movies they produce are great, it just something ****ed up about american audiences(arrogance?) where we don't give other national films much of a chance.

My copy of Das Boot has a dub on it. I just couldn't get into the film with the dubs. It didn't sound very natural at all so I just watched it with the original German and subtitles.

Now Godzilla movies OTOH RULES when it comes to dubbing. It's always good for a laugh or two.

The "Das Boot" dub was one of the better dubs ever though, since all the real actors did them. I still watch the German version though...

The Godzilla movies have to be watched in dub, you can't take them seriously, and the dub only confirms that...LOL I would never watch that in subtitles!

There an interesting sounding (but long) Italian movie on my On Demand service that I think i'll watch called "best of youth" or something like that. I'll let you all know how I like it next week or so.

                        Re: Best Foreign Movies

I have a huge collection of foreign films(about 300 hundred or so)mostly from asia. It takes time to get used to subtitles and i think people just want to enjoy the films and not read them. just have patience and the subtitle watching will get better.

also, I think dubbing is dumb but when you watch a old godzilla or hk matial arts film it does add to the cheese factor. when you hera some like "but still, your kung-fu is weak" just have to laugh.

City of God and Das Boot.

Interestingly enough I have the uncut version of Das Boot which is nearly six hours in length, so I've only seen it once.

It's great for fans on the original movie since it adds 2 1/2 hours to the Director's Cut.

Being a fan of anytihng U-boat related I'd reccommend it.

It folllows the lives of 5 family members from the late 60's to present day Italy. It is 6 hours, and should probably be watched in 2 or 3 sessions. It mainly focuses on 2 brothers lives, as they mature. Great hisorical background of Italy, as well as cinematography of the country.
