    Insurance Agent jobs..

I'm 22 and I graduate in May from College. I interviewed today for a position to become an Insurance Agent. I was offered the job and need to get back to them next week with my decision. I was just curious if anyone out there was an insurance agent and had any advice or what have you about the industry or anything in general. I appreciate it in advance.

I'm not an insurance agent, but the few people that I know that started off as insurance agents all moved on to something else. So I look at it 2 ways, either the job wasn't that great, or while it wasn't great it gave them experience to move on to something else thereby helping in the long run.

At 22, I'd say take it if you have nothing else as an option. Get 2 or 3 years experience and then you can move on to something else if it doesn't suit you.

Are you going to be captive or independent agent?

Are you asking me? I'm not an agent, but it depends on the company. Agency jobs are probably 90% comission, you get a base unless you're an independent, then the owner of the agency would pay you whatever, but your money still comes from comission, which can be anywhere from 6-14% per policy sold. Again, depends on the company.

It would be independent for Farmers Insurance.

Unless you have a strong entreprenurial personality, it probably isn't for you. You'll most likely have to generate your own leads, and even if you are provided leads, they might not be that strong.

In insurance, you can make a lot of money, get by, or starve. It all depends on how hard you work. If you're a hard worker, you'll be compensated. If not, well it won't take you long...

Anyway, you can make good money, but the real money is in having your own branch or office. But, that also carries a ton of legal and moral responsibility.
