Young Rap Fans = More Prone to Alcohol, Drug Use, and Aggressive Behaviour

On the heels of Proof's death, a study released last week by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation - a nonprofit public health research group - suggested that young people who listen to rap music are more prone to alcohol and drug use and aggressive behaviour.

I think 50 cent is mostly right in what he says:

    But 50's not buying it.

He points a finger at parents, who he thinks should explain to their children that his music is a form of entertainment, not a licence to break the law.

"I think that the violence that happened to Proof and the violence that's happening across America right now has nothing to do with hip-hop," he said. "It has something to do with the people - the state of them - and the music doesn't alter that."
Tho, i'll add that sometimes the music can fuel the violence. Look at what music has done in the past. It has fueled the Civil Rights Movement and the Free Love movement of the 60s so music DOES have an affect whether good or bad.

Still, the reponsibility lies with the parents in deciding what their kids should listen to.

I didn't need a study to tell me that. Rap/Hip-Hop is the music of choice these days at clubs and frat houses where drug and alcohol use is high. Also, statistics show young black men are more prone to such behavior as well (due to a number of factors) and young black men typically are Rap/Hip-Hop fans. And of course, drug and alcohol abuse can lead to aggressive behaviour.

It's kind of funny/sad people actually invest a lot of money into such studies.

Music can invoke responses from the listener that manifest in physical behaviour, be it simply tapping one's foot or something more extreme such as moshing. But 50 Cent is right, ultimately it all falls on the people who commit these acts of violence and using any form of entertainment as an excuse is just a scape goat.

Well, what you said are mostly assumptions. Sometimes studies can be redundant and other times they can help confirm or deny stereotypes.

A survey of more than 1,000 community college students found that rap music was consistently associated with alcohol use, potential alcohol use disorder, illicit drug use and aggressive behavior.

          Because that carries weight.

No, my responses are not mostly assumptions but statistically proven. This is not a subject I am unfamiliar with. The closest thing to an assumption I made was in reference to music featured at clubs since that is taken mostly from personal experience.

Re: Young Rap Fans = More Prone to Alcohol, Drug Use, and Aggressive Behaviour

I know rap gets attacked a lot by "researchers" but I think there is a little bit of truth in their studies.

Certain rap artists attract a certain type of fan that other non-rappers don't.

Back when I was younger, I use to go clubbing a lot. You could see a difference in the type of crowd a hip hop night attracts versus a Top 40 night.

There's a big difference in the amount of violent incidents.

Heck let me ask you all a question. If you had to pick between a 50 cent concert vs. a Rob Thomas concert, which concert do you think would have a higher chance of violence breaking out? Pretty much all of you would pick 50 cent.

But it's foolish for anybody to just blame rap music and ignore other factors.

You are not wrong in your assessment. I just think it is important to point out that is isn't the music's fault or responsibility, but more of a coincidence that people more prone to this behaviour enjoy rap music.

I know a lot of people think studies can be rendundant or provide "duh"-type information, but at least this statement has SOME data to back it up.

When you say "not true at all", what do YOU have to back yourself up?
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

I have my experience and the experience of people that I know. Blaming music on the behaviors of people is just as bad as blaming video games for violence. One of the questions I have for people is wouldn't it make sense that violent people seek out violent entertainment? A person who is more prone to violence is going to be interested in violent images or music.
