So when will the rap fad go away?
Before anyone wants to put a cap in my a$#. Let me finish...I am 34 years old, I grew up in the 80's, witnessed the birth and adolesence of "rap" and like some of it..mostly in the 80's and very early 90's. From what I remember, there was break dancing, which led to the birth pains of modern day rap music. I really dont like it now, every once in awhile a song or two comes along I can handle. Long story short, I've seen disco, new wave, heavy metal hair bands, grunge, country, boy bands, and now rap is the flavor of the month...I know it will never go away and I dont want it to. But as far as it being the top dog dominating "pop music" and the charts, how much longer does it have. It will not be on top forever, NOTHING ever is. Damn I cant remember who it was...Jurmaine Dupri or someone in a Blender magazine article made a comment on how he has noticed a desire for more of an R&B flavor lately, and that the rap/hip hop dominated musical landscape as it is now is about to change. Im not hating.....Just a mature voice who can honestly say that rap/hip hops dominance will not last as nothing ever has...War! Public Enemy and Eric B. and Rakim...and not much after that...peace.Tags: None -
Re: So when will the rap fad go away?
thats exactly what rap is, 'popular music'...
it grew from men who had experienced a rough life, ala tupac, and so they sung about that, but now, altho ppl like 50 have been shot and lived a rough life, he sings about women, moreso then how rough life is.... rap today is like power ballads in the 80s except with a different beatPSN: Peji911 -

What you see on MTV/BET these days shouldn't even be considered rap.

Re: So when will the rap fad go away?
Again, I know rap will be along forever, and I like some of it...Im just talking about its dominance of the charts. Nothing....nothing dominates forever and Im just wondering when only 1 or 2 of the "Top 10" are considered rap as opposed to 7 or 8.Comment

Re: So when will the rap fad go away?
I gotta admit the mainstream does suck and this is coming from a HUGE rap fan. I'm still kinda stuck in that Nas/WUtang/Mobb Deep 90's era. I hate crunk music, snap music, hyphy music, and a lot of other stuff I hear on the radio.Comment

Re: So when will the rap fad go away?
Growing up, I wasnt a big fan of heavy metal hair bands when it was all the rage. I thought it would never end, but you know what...it did..grunge killed it..then the "pop-country" just dominated the charts in the mid to late 90's...now its rap/hip hops turn...somewhere there is some band in some garage, playing who knows what, that has the hammer and nail to put in raps coffin as far as the soundscan/billboard 40 is concerned. As a post script, I really like 80's hair bands now, who knows maybe in 10 years Ill be kickin it wit dem franchize boyz!Comment

Historically popular music is usually dominated by what ever teens 16 to about 25 year old adults find "cool"... and usually its what ever is the most rebellious or opposed music by the older generation. Rap has been and will continue to be the anti culture of our society so the trend will most likely continue. As long as the kiddies think its coolComment

Re: So when will the rap fad go away?
Ya...I liked Ice T....I liked Public Enemy and Eric B. like I said. I bought the NWA single "dopeman" on 12", the one with about 15 gangstas on the cover in some alley with 40's lying all around. I can dig old school, I bought the Deep Cover soundrtrack just so I could hear Snoop say "147 on a Mother F@#$!)* coooooppppp!( I think it was 147, maybe 187.....sorry Im old)Comment

Re: So when will the rap fad go away?
Before I immersed myself in underground rap, I used to think rap sucked too. Problem is, the "pop rap" you see on MTV and hear on the radio does indeed suck. But the rap artists are out there, you just need to look for them.
Take a look at the guests that Dave Chappelle had on his show as an example. Mos Def, the Wu, ?uestlove....he made it a point to invite artists onto his show, not just rappers. But there are very few rap artists in the mainstream these days, mostly because there are too many lousy, derivative rappers tapping into the money goldmine that is the Total Request Live-watching rich suburbia.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
