Re: John Entwistle: Greatest of All Time?

Ok, since "Greatest of All Time" is purely subjective (Unless we're talking about Ali) there's no sense in debating it. That said, Entwistle HAS to be mentioned in the GOD'S OF THE LOWER REGISTER when containing the list to the Rock milieu.

I had the opportunity to play his buzzard bass while he was touring the states with his "solo" band. His rig was incredible! Right on the edge of out of control, and the action on his bass was amazingly low!

I also had the pleasure of seeing Billy Sheehan the other week in a tribute to The Who. I can't think of anyone better suited to fill the role of Ox.

If they caught J.Mayer with Buddy Guy or on the Crossroads Concert, they wouldn't say unfortunately. Have you heard the JMT disc yet? Heady stuff.

While Jaco was innovative, he was a jazz player (and fretless at that). I'm not sure the comparison can be made. It's like trying to decide who's better between Jim Brown and Wayne Gretzky.

I don't see the comparison between Jaco and a rock bassist as that extreme. We can debate guitar players from different spectrums of playing so I think we can do the same for bassists, although I see your point. I was just surprised that no one even mentioned his name in a Greatest Bass Player of All Time discussion, as his name is usually around the top.

I've never really thought of JPJ as one of the best.

I like the sounds of Geddy Lee's bass as well.
