You should be cool with either. I have a Linksys wrt54g and it works like a champ.

Firmware created by other people (not Linksys) to add functionality to the device.

Like what? I'd be intersted to see what different things I could do with my router.

I haven't really looked into it because I don't want to void my warranty. You could probably just search google and find some info. I don't believe it's anything us regular users would benefit from.

That's what I figured, I can't imagine it's anything that I would need. I was just curious on why that was one of the first responses, "Get a Linksys and 3rd party firmware". Since I've been wireless with Linksys for 3 1/2 years, I was curious.

                      Re: Router Help

From what I've read, the 3rd party firmware hack adds additionaly functionality and somewhat improved performance.

                      - Aids in file sharing as the current firmware only allows for a certain # of connections.

                      - Allows a user to assign specific IP's to specific network cards within a DHCP range (ie: static DHCP). If anyone is familiar with Active Directory DHCP Scopes, it's like adding an exclusion to that scope.

                      - Allows a user to "overclock" their router and get the most out of it.

There are multiple 3rd party firmware upgrades. I've just read about them - haven't tried them so I really don't know if it's worth it.

I'll echo the sentiments of the other WRT54G owners.

                          somewhat of a router question.

when I use bittorrent for sites like xboxyde.com to get their videos, I need to have specific ports open, so i go through my browser to 192.168.1.1 to set up the right open right...

well, with my router, every day it seems, the 100-103 IP address seems to change on my pc.. its just a choir going through windows explorer to see what IP im set at for the day and then going through IE to the 192 web address to change it.

Anybody know of any programs that automatically change the IP to continue staying open when the 100-103 number changes

You need to just set a static IP address on you PC. Go to network connections, then LAN connection, right-click go to properties, double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), set for static IP. Give your PC something like 192.168.1.100 and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway to 192.168.1.1. You can either set your DNS to automatic or set it to 192.168.1.1. That way your PC's IP address will never change.

                              beautiful. thanks

ive always had some trouble with the 192.168.1.1 website so i never attempted setting the system to static IP, because I would be very lost. so this method seems to be perfect
