No, Kodiak, I live in upstate N.Y. But I will be in Indy to work the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, and the Black Crowes, Drive-By Truckers and Robert Randolph are playing on the lawn at White River Park on the Friday night of Brickyard weekend. I'm going to try to go if I can get out of work at the track in time.

That sounds like one hell of a show, PK. I just got back from a friend's house where we were watching the Black Crowes at the Fillmore. Good stuff.

The Ryan Adams concert is on that Thursday night, August 3rd. I remembered you mentioning Cold Roses as one of your favorites from last year. I've become a pretty big fan since Love is Hell. Tickets are like 25 bucks so its pretty cheap.

Regardless of where CCR is originally from, they should be considered Southern Rock......but, The Eagles? I don't think so.

Now if you want a good older, but a little obscure Southern rocker who can really bang on the keys.....grab some best of Leon Russell! You'll recognize some of his songs. In fact, Elliot, the one American Idol finalist, butchered "Song For You". But, my favorite tracks of his are probably Roll Away The Stong and Shootout On The Plantation.

A friend at work found out Ryan Adams is playing like an hour away later this month and wants to go. I figured I would tag along. Tickets are like 25-30 bucks, not bad.

While I wouldn't call The Eagles southern rock, they have a country-rock feel to them.

Yeah, but the other bands that are being discussed here didn't sell out like Blackfoot. When Southern rock didn't sell for them, Blackfoot turned into an MTV hair band.

                      Re: Southern Rock

I've had a couple days to listen to "Decoration Day" by the Drive-By Truckers. While the first listen didn't knock me off my feet like "Southern Rock Opera" did, the album is fantastic. Everything that I thought were the best parts of SRO are on "Decoration Day" and the album has the perfect mix of hard rockers and the softer rock songs.

Favorite songs so far: Sinkhole, Hell No I Ain't Happy, Your Daddy Hates Me, and When The Pin Hits The Shelf.

Graveyard BBQ. They were in Guitar Hero. More metal than rock though.

I'm going to bump this simply because Drive-By Truckers' "Brighter than Creation's Dark" is my favorite album of the year, thus far and its probably their second best album (depending on my mood, but it will definitely be fighting The Dirty South and Decoration Day for that spot). Plus, I'm going to see DBT in September and I can't wait.

Also, I found a little known band about a month or so ago called Southern Culture on the Skids. They're more country-rock/rockabilly, but they still warrant an investigation.

If you are digging the Allman Brothers...get

                              First Set
                              Second Set
And any high quality bootleg shows that you can get your hands on. Their live stuff is where the magic happens much like all other "southern rock / Improv" bands.

For a deeper search into their Souls...

Duane Allman Anthology 1 and 2 are incredible treats that shows how far their influence and their styles have crossed musical gaps. Also, Greg Allman Anthology is a great complilation of music as well.

As daflyboy stated...maybe the single most underappreciated and simply the most incredible band of that era / southern rock band could be "The Band". These guys take musical badarseness to an all time new level. Do yourself a favor...pick up there 3 disk box set. Each member of The Band is an incredible walk do musical History. From Danko's strange amazing voice, to Manuel's softness and incredible emotion, to Robbie incredible writing and guitar styling (even though he was a dick) to Mr. Levon Helm who I think might have the greatest snarling voice of the 60-70-80-90's.....Just saw him and his daughter play the other night with his new band. The did all the old tunes...plus their new ones. Amazing to see....

                              Seriously...can you compete with that?
