Re: Superman Returns
I already posted my reactions to the film in the other thread, but I want to say that Superman should not be made a darker or more adult character. Batman is the dark hero who should appeal to an older audience (as well as kids) where as Superman is supposed to be more accessible. I think this is a move that should be made with kids in mind because it would be silly to have a Superman movie that doesn't include children in its target audience. I'm not saying Superman can't be enjoyed by adults, though. I thought the movie was good for what it was, it was a Superman movie through and through and easily the best since the original.
Though I do have a question for those of you who have a better memory of the original films (I don't think I've seen them since I was 5) but didn't Superman reveal his secret identity to Lois in one of them? I think it was Superman 2 but like I said I don't remember the originals too well.Comment

Re: Superman Returns
Superman is about hope and is more of a feel good character and as he should be, not every superhero movie has to be dark and bleak as each one is different. What people want is an epic Superman with great orchestral music and fantastic scenery, but also the slow moments are just as remembered as it gives depth to the characters and makes you care for them when they are in peril. I for one never want a straight comic book movie because what you would get is Batman and Robin which is a pathetic movie. I will always like a more realistic, real world feel compared to the comics where everything is more over the top, exaggerated and outlandish."If you don't have anything good to say, say it often"- Ed the sockComment

Re: Superman Returns
I saw the movie tonight and loved it. Spoiler free, I'll give some impressions...
First off, I think that Brandon Routh was 100% perfectly cast for this movie. It was totally believable that he is the same character as the previous movies, something I wasn't sure was going to be pulled off. I swear at times he sounded just like Chris Reeve. His Superman and Kent were wonderful in keeping what we've seen before. Spacey was a good Luthor, much better than Hackman. It was obvious that Singer built this character on Hackman's portrayal, but in this movie Luthor brings more a ruthlessness to him and Spacey does well with it. Luthor still has some goons with him, but nothing like Otis. The goons worked well in this movie because Luthor knows how to use useless people in his plans. I did think that Kate Bosworth was a weak Lois Lane. I don't know if it was her or just how her character was written. Her role was basically just any girl. At times the character was good, but she just wasn't Lois Lane enough. I personally think Erica Durance from Smallville plays a wonderful Lois. Bosworth didn't stink acting wise, her character just wasn't totally right. She did have some very well acted emotional moments though.
My favorite part of the movie was definitely the flying scenes and the scenes involving Superman saving people. They were wonderfully done. He looks like he is flying and he looks like he is saving the day. It's just something I haven't seen in a comic book movie until know. X-Men use their mutant powers, and Spidey uses his strength, but nothing like this IMO. The scene were Superman returns to the public eye in this movie was outstanding. I love how it was strongly influenced by Superman's first public appearance in the comics.
I didn't really like the explanation of Superman's leaving. They say why and I understand why he leaves, but I can't believe the way he leaves. Pretty irresponsible for someone the world trusts in. I could go more indepth, but I don't really want to say anything about the movie directly.
Going into the movie I had two things that I wasn't too crazy for, the suit and the kid. There was nothing wrong with the suit in the movie, I was pleasantly surprised. The emblem, which was my big hangup, looked just fine. I'm still mixed on the kid. I hope there's more to him in future movies, because I just didn't feel he was needed in this movie. He's there for a purpose and there is an important story with him, but it wasn't really needed for this movie. Maybe the next one.
But many of you don't seem to like the Superman character before this movie, well you probably won't think this is a great movie either because this movie is a great representation of what Superman is and what he stands for.
The movie did a great job building on the Superman legacy we already had in the first couple movies, Singer definitely did not ignore the fact that they exists. I can't wait to see it again. I'm not a big fan of the ending of the two first movies, I thought they were incomplete (original movie) or just plain silly (Supes II), this one had nothing like that. The two hour forty minute movie used that time very well. It wasn't dragged out and it wasn't cut short. I thought it was great and it portrayed Superman very well. The Superman score in the movie added tons of emotion throughout the movie as well. It was awesome.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

I hope you know that all 4 Superman movies are being released in the Fall as Special Director's Cuts with missing footage added to them. This will be cool.
I do agree that Erica Durance plays a great Lois Lane in Smallville.Comment

Re: Superman Returns
I am a huge superman fan, he's my favorite superhero ever. I just love the scenes when crazy s*** is happening everywhere and superman saves the day.
But somehow this movie let me down... I dont know what it is.I really just dont like singer's movies, they all have the same "attitude" i guess you could call it. Something just doesn't feel right to me.
I dont really know how to explain it, the only way I can is this:
all the superhero movies (spiderman, xmen, superman) had the same feeling except for Batman begins. That felt different then them all. I thought it was because it was a DC movie as opposed to Marvel, and thus Superman would be different as well, but nope... it reminded me more of spidey and x-men.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about??? I know I need to elaborate but I cant find the words

Re: Superman Returns
if u want dark and brooding, then u have batman.
if u want someone about justice and morals, then its superman. hence him having an upbringing on a farm with traditional family values and the american way.
wow if u dont like the character, tehn why even watch it then.
after seeing the movie, it was purely a homage to all superman fans of the movies.Comment
