Permanently deleting Internet Explorer.

How do I get this POS of a web browser off my PC. I keep getting popups even with my blockers activated. When I try to delete IE, It keeps coming back a minute later.

Try removing it using the Add / Remove Programs thing in the WinXP control panel. Note that IE is not in the general programs list and rather is listed under Windows components.

you got a virus or are visiting some crappy sites.. IE is fine on my pc. but once I get to that crappy site, the virus or bug stays with me forever. I am somewhat forced to restore my computer every month. its not IEs fault though. Firefox does the same thing

I don't get it: If I assume you're using Firefox or another alternative browser and you're not even launching IE, then how the hell are you getting popups from IE?

I was having this same problem. I was getting popups that were Internet Explorer even though all I use is firefox and pretty much only getting the popups when I was using firefox. I tried through IE to block all popups and cookies but nothing. Until when scanning the news links from Steve I ran across this site http://lesliefranke.com/files/refere...heatsheet.html and then I went and made firefox my default browser and ever since no popups from IE. I also have microsoft's antispyware set to scan at 3am and it does occasionally find stuff that I can then remove. Good luck trying to fix this problem because it drove me nuts.

This only removes the IE shortcuts, it doesn't remove the browser entirely.

Vince - To be honest, don't bother. IE is so embedded into the OS that it can't be 100% removed.

Vince - To be honest, don't bother. IE is so embedded into the OS that it can't be 100% removed.

That's correct. It's a complete waste of time. In case you didn't know, you can even type web addresses in the "address" bar when looking through your local directories. It will still launch IE even if you have selected to remove it.

It's basically the complete base of windows explorer.

What you need to do is run some sort of spyware removal... pop-ups without doing anything is not a good thing.

Try Windows defender... it's actually pretty useful.

Thank goodness I have a Max and use Safari to browse the net. No IE problems whatsoever!!!

Then I guess Jack Bauer will have to snap IE's neck or if Chuck Norris does a roundhouse kick to IE, maybe that will work.
