Getting rid of the penny coin?

Edmond Knowles, of Flomaton, Ala. He hoarded pennies for nearly four decades as a hobby. He ended up with more than 1.3 million of them — 4.5 tons — in several drums in his garage. His bank refused to take them all at once, but he finally found a coin-counting company, Coinstar, that wanted the publicity.

In the biggest known penny cash-in ever, they sent an armored truck last year, loaded his pennies, and then watched helplessly as it sank into the mud in his yard. They needed a tow truck to redeem it. “I still got a few ruts in the yard,” says Knowles.

His years of collecting brought him about $1 a day — $13,084.59 in all.

I'm not a big fan of coins or dollar bills. I wish they were eliminated all together in favor of eletronic cards. I'll make a prediction right now that 50 years from now, there won't be coins or bills anymore. A worldwide currency would be nice too.

I mainly use my credit card to buy things but I do throw my pennies into a jar. I traded in my pennies to the bank 3 weeks ago and I recieved 4 dollars in return.

    Pennies are for bums.

So I throw them on the ground.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

So you like giving old ladies lots of luck then? You know the old saying about finding pennies will give you luck.

I don't think we'll ever go fully electronic but I can see a day when Debit and Credit is the dominant means of monetary exchange.

I'll happily pick up a penny.

And a move to a worldwide currency is called socialism. I hope it never happens in my lifetime.

i remember my days in HS, we would glue or even throw pennies in the courtyard at lunch and see people running to pick them up, or even try to get the glued ones.

best 3 dollars weve ever spent. pennies have great entertainment value

I think I know what you mean but I would say there are either close to being used most of the time or near it, but not dominant over bills/coins of course.

Pennies are practically worthless (I know, they're worth 1 cent, but you know what I mean). You just throw them on the ground or at people.

One of the reasons people are thinking of dumping the Penny is that it actually costs 1.4 cents to make one penny. You know you have problems when the production costs more then the final product.

My daughter gets all my change from pennies to silver coins. She racked up almost 40 bucks in just 5 months and we counted it almost 5 months ago. I would say 5-10 bucks were from pennies. You guys must be silly to throw away any lose change. Coinstar is your friend.
