Firefly.

The show was cancelled, stupidly, by Fox. It will leave you wanting more - much more. The Serenity movie is a good follow-up, but watch the series first and it makes the movie that much better.

The Shield is good.

It doesn't necessarily fit your On-Going story rule, but I really love HOUSE. Great show!!

Law and Order: Criminal Intent is underrated as well. It has a lot of characters that stretch over multiple episodes. And Vincent D'Nofrio (sp) is GREAT in that show.

Firefly is a good suggestion, but it's probably not a great idea to get addicted to a series that's already been cancelled with no hope of revival.

Lost, Band of Brothers, and the Wire are all fantastic. Band of Brothers is probably the greatest TV miniseries of all time. The characters are engaging, the story is authentic, and the special effects are movie-quality. Highly, highly recommended. I've watched it 3x through.

The Wire is probably my favorite TV show, ever. It's relatively slow-paced, but it plays out more like a movie instead of like a TV show and each episode doesn't necessarily have a big 24-esque cliffhanger payoff as it spins its story. Very gritty and realistic storytelling, great ensemble cast....just awesome.

And Lost, well....Lost is good too. But everybody watches Lost.

Buy Arrested Development on DVD.

Well if you're not adverse to older shows and soapier stuff then DALLAS is right up your alley. The first couple seasons or so aren't really ongoing but the buildup to "who shot J.R." is probably my favourite buildup to any season finale of all time.

Give it a shot. It's a great show and Season 5 is coming out on August 1st!

Lost (just recently got season1 on DVD, never seen it on TV, completely hooked)
Sopranos (although its been slowly going downhill lately...)
Band of Brothers definitely.

lost and band of brothers are great... though i kinda lost track with lost i need to get season 2 and watch it all the way through because my schedule is just too busy to watch every show... (tivo would be nice

Veronica Mars - may seem like a teen series but it actually is good.

Stargate SG1 - a bad episode of Stargate still is a good episode of Stargate

I enjoy: Family Guy, Entourage, Arrested Development (hilarious, but you'll have to rent/buy the DVDs), It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Futurama. I have the entire dvd set and for awhile that was pretty much the only thing I watched. I think I'm a bit burned out now but it's a great show and supposedly there are some movies coming out soon. Oh and like Skerik said, the Wire is a great show. It doesn't have the same formula that cop shows have, the lines between the cops and the drug dealers are blurred and the writing is just great. I can't wait until the next season.

The Shield is very addicting, Band of Brothers was amazing...hell even Over There was good too.

Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me would be good choices too.

I don't think it's out on DVD yet, but Prison Break is pretty good.
