The writing for this show is really getting bad. It is clear that they are just going off on "tangents" so the show can ride its course. What's the point of introducing these new characters and their backgrounds when in the end, they probably play no relevance to the real story line. We spent all season 2 learning about Anna Lucia and Echo and they just went out without any real significance.

I get the same feeling about this lady doctor. They are only going to go back and concentrate on the original castaways when the show needs an extra shot in the arm for ratings. The series would have been best served to only be 2 seasons with some real punch. If they try to make this last 7 seasons, none of us will be happy with the results.

Its clear that the original story line has changed and the writers are bumbling along to make the story line flow, but it just isn't working. Too many loose ends that they won't be able to tie up.

I think they do that to add to the whole "man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. self" thing by showing more examples of it. Plus, they both could still have major significance. Eko getting killed by the black-smoke monster obviously has to come back into play.

Well, they changed their goal recently. No longer are they going for 7 seasons, but now it's 5. I don't think 5 is too long, and it will certainly give the writers enough time to tie everything up.

I have to disagree.

The deaths of Ana-Lucia, Libby, and Eko were important to the central storyline. The only reason we don't fully understand their deaths is because we don't understand the Island and it's purpose.

Well, Ana-Lucia is probably the most unimportant in the long run, but her inclusion was instrumental to the death of Shannon and Shannon's death is instrumental to Sayid's frame of mind, not to mention we still don't know her reasons for seeing a drenched Walt in the woods.

Libby is likely a very important character because of her unconventional background. She has a lot of loose ends, which will actually be answered later this season. ie: reasons for giving Desmond the boat and how she got from there to the mental institution. Which of course then traces back to Hugo in some way.

Eko died because of the black smoke and we are still confused why the Black Smoke killed him after sparring him before. Why does Locke see it as a good thing, which Eko also saw, but then eventually had it turn it's back on him.

In other words, the inclusion of these characters is likely to build answers in the long run without the expense of killing major characters.

I know exactly why it killed him, because in his revalations, he told his brother that he was not sorry for the things he had done in the past, because he deemed them necessary to keep everyone safe.

Once we saw his revalation where he confesses as such to his brother, the smoke takes him.

When the smoke saw him the first time, it was intimidated by him because he saw no fear, he was again a god fearing man, after the confession to his brother, the smoke saw things differently, hence, it destroyed him.

Ok, true.

But, it's still puzzling why the Black Smoke finds a reason to kill him just because of a confession.

I don't recall the pilot doing anything out of the ordinary before he was killed. It just seems inconsistent. The smoke has had the opportunity to kill many people, but it decides on Eko?

And it's decision to kill Eko was probably predetermined because it put Eko in the position to confess that he had not sinned against his brother. It hasn't done that to anyone else - but instead has only attacked without reason (ie: chasing Jack, Kate, and Charlie in Season One).

I just feel that there is more to it's reasoning and perhaps the motivation behind the Black Smoke will reveal those reasons.

I agree with Fistofrage, Lost is a shell of its former self, for the sake of stringing it along and making more money basically. And giving the people a job for a while longer.

By the way Ecko had to die because the actor that played him was leaving the show, after a series of personal tragedies in his real life and I guess they felt that was the best way to get him out of the show (by letting the character die).

Yea, I know about Eko's death and Libby's and Ana Lucia's supposed reasons for being killed off as well, but the writers are still going to try to do it intelligently.

Just because Eko wanted off doesn't mean they will do it without good reason behind it.

Supposedly, Matthew Fox (Jack) wants off the show as well so he could pursue a movie career. That doesn't mean they're going to have him get hit by a balloon from Ms. Gale in episode 12 to off him.

Finally got to watch the episode.

Great episode, in my opinion.

And Jack leaving this show...would honestly make me not want to watch the final two seasons - if he leaves this season, that is - because he is without a doubt my favorite character, and really the center of the show - as much as some people may not like it.
