Exactly, this whole situation with Mel really angers me, because it seems people just want to give him the "Coup de grace" on this.

Should Mel have said what he said? Heck no. Should Mel have been driving drunk? Heck no. Please stop comparing Mel to yourself, because you aren't Mel and Mel sure as hell isn't you.

Mel has already issues two apologies, what more do you want from him? As for the person who said the movie "The Passion" is anti-semetic....well thatt's honestly a ridiculous comment as exactly how many anti-semetic attacks occured b/c of the films release?

People seem to forget that we are all humans, and humans do make mistakes. So I sure get sick of these "Mel knew what he was doing", "I get drunk and don't do that" type comments.

Mel has asked for forgiveness, he's checked himself into rehab, and he has asked for leaders of the Jewish community to help him overcome his shortcomings. It takes a big man to admit he was wrong, so get off his case already.

Finally, for the people who keep saying "Oh, Mel knew what he was saying, or I've been drunk and never done that." Need to remember everyone is different. Nobody knows what Mel was going through that night. And unless the people making those types of comments have NEVER EVER gotten drunk or angry at someone and said things to hurt someone that they didn't mean to say, then honestly you need to STFU.

Nobody has room to judge the man, NOBODY.

Well, his sympathy campaign clearly worked on you. The "big man" admitting he was wrong knows his Hollywood career is shot to hell if the Jewish community blacklists him, so you're seeing him grovel before them and ask for their help in "overcoming his problem" to save his career. Big whoop.

By the way, It's also worth noting that Mel's father is a Nazi apologist who has issued statements to the effect that the Holocaust is "mostly fiction." And as they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Just, you know, throwing that out there.

Finally, comparing the statements Mel made with getting angry with someone while drunk is pretty absurd. Chances are, you actually were angry with the person at the time and your lowered inhibitions let your feelings surface instead of being kept within. But things like political beliefs, or bigotry, don't come to the surface as a result of alcohol consumption if they don't exist to begin with. You think someone who doesn't feel that way is going to come shooting their mouth off with Jew hatred for no reason, with no underlying basis for those statements, just because they had a few drinks? Right.

You remarked, "Nobody knows what Mel was going through that night." Who cares? What could he have gone through that would give him a free pass to say what he said? His BAC was 0.12....the dude wasn't on hallucinogens or something. His true colors came shining through and the fact that he's appealing to the Jewish community to "help him on his journey through recovery" means he's acknowledged that he has a problem. And he's not talking about alcoholism.

These "who are we to judge" comments are beyond stupid. We have every right to judge.

Whats with all of this moral high-horse crap around here? It seems like in every topic someone wants to portray themselves as being above everyone else. This is a topic about Mel Gibson. Who cares?! If someone wants to choose to dislike him because of this episode they have every right to, and if someone doesn't want to they have that right as well.

First of all, I didn't nor did I see anyone else mention Mel's father, my comments were not directed in a defense of Mel's father or his comments.

As for your saying that's what Mel really meant to say, nobody really knows that but Mel, and he has come out and said it was wrong and has apologized, not only once, but twice. And your comments about what has existed to Mel to begin with done hold water, unless you're a trained psychiatric professional and you've had the chance to talk/diagnose Mr. Gibson yourself.

I never said anything gave Mel "a free pass" to say what he said. You should also know that people react differently to alcohol, so you really cannot comment on to what exactly his state was. 0.12 BAC is way over the limit than what is legally allowed here.

Atleast Mel has acknowledged he has a problem, even if it is Alcoholism or bigotry or both. I think it takes a big person to admit they have a problem, and a bigger person to try to overcome it.

Lastly, I find your holier-than-thou attitude over this to be really disgusting, and I seriously hope you never find yourself in a situation where you have done/said something you didn't mean.

          And this....

"These "who are we to judge" comments are beyond stupid. We have every right to judge."

By what power and authority were you given this right?

Gee thanks. Amazingly, that has happened to me before and I assumed some personal accountability for my actions instead of hiding behind a defense of "I was a drunken crazyman, so instead of ostracizing me please pity me as I now begin my long journey through rehab." But guess what - my statements weren't racist. Had I come out and said something incredibly racist towards Jews that my Jewish friends got wind of, I'd fully expect them to look at me differently for the rest of our friendship instead of thinking I'd get off with a comment like, "Hey man, you know how it is, I was drunk and saying stuff I don't mean." Like I said, the kind of things Mel said don't just pop up out of nowhere like someone throwing out an "I hate you" when they're drunk and mad at you.

LOL, I'm not really sure how to answer this one, other to say that it's pretty funny these remarks were in the same post accusing me of being "holier-than-thou." I don't need anyone's permission to judge others based on their actions, and neither do you, and neither does anyone. It's kind of an unavoidable truth that people are defined by what they do, and as such can be "judged" by other people. But I'm not wearing a robe and sitting on a bench, if that's what you were asking.

Yeah, but is Gibson apologizing and checking into rehab because he means it or because his handlers told him to do it to save his career?

You don't have to ask yourself that question with an average Joe. You do have to ask it with Hollywood phonies like Gibson.

Plus, if Gibson's alcoholism is a "disease," he didn't just catch it that night in Malibu. If he's suffered from this "disease" for a while, then why didn't he check into rehab earlier? It isn't because he needs to dry out to save face in Hollywood and for moviegoers around the world, is it?

              Take care,
              PK

                Re: Mel Gibson behaving badly

Thank you to the people who handled this thread in a mature manner. Unfortunately, a few lines were crossed here and being peppered with powderkeg issues like religion, race, alcoholism as a disease... We'd prefer that it was moved to a forum more suitable for this debate.

                Thank you.
